After reading the other persons review on this site I was preparing myself for the worst.
However, what could be more different than what I expected - really helpful staff, a cheery atmosphere and a home from home like feeling. Six Mary's Place is really different from any other B&B I've stayed in, and we took quite a few of the rooms.
Six Mary's Place is located in Raeburn Place, Stockbridge, about a 10 minute walk to Princes Street and 15 minutes to the Old Town. Its in a lovely part of the city, which has an almost village like atmosphere, with numerous shops, cafe's, deli's and restaurants all on your doorstep. Six Mary's Place is located in the heart of all of this and is an 18th century Townhouse with rooms on three floors and a large family room in the basement (garden level). There is also a lounge where you can sit and read the papers, access the internet, read up on what to do and where to eat in Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
Each room is ensuite with brightly coloured and simply furnished rooms, with ensuite and WC (mostly showers). You have a phone, internet connection, tea and coffee making facilitiies, TV, hairdryer in all rooms. There are a choice of single, double, twin and one family room and prices range from £35 per person per night sharing to £60 pppn dependent on season. Single rooms cost slightly more.
Breakfast (vegetarian only) is served in the Conservatory, and was a splendid affair - though no meat is served - (don't worry there is a great cafe around the corner called The Stockpot if you really crave a Full Scottish Breakfast!), and the staff will happily accomodate any dietary needs.
This year, Six Mary's Place has won a place in the Which? Guide to Hotels and B&B's in UK. They thoroughly deserve it - don't take my word for it - on arrival go into the lounge and read the guest comments book - thats what Which? did, and thats why St Mary's Place is now in the book. Nothing is too much trouble, and you are made to feel part of the family.
I'll certainly be returning!
