I stayed in the Glenalmond Guest House in Edinburgh on a recent business trip when I was driving South to the Borders region and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. I chose a Guest House instead of the usual hotel stopover and I will be using this particular Guest House from now on when I am visiting Edinburgh.

Service was great - friendly & helpful - the owners obviously knew the area well and recommended a superb restaurant for dinner. On site parking was a plus and the Guest House had been recently refurbished throughout. The rooms are very classy and although I only needed a standard room I had a look at the deluxe rooms with four poster beds, fridges, large plasma screens etc - very cool decor and finished to a really high standard.

Breakfasts also great - huge choice and a spacious, spotless breakfast room. I will be back and would have no hesitation in recommending this Guest House to anyone.

The wife and i stayed at glenalmond for three nights over the new year and had a lovely stay, the location is a fair way from the city center but there are very frequent buses which stop close by. Our room was very clean and tidy but small and i would recommend booking one of the larger rooms if staying for more than 1 night'. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choices and the hosts fiona and jimmy were very welcoming and helpful,in all a very pleasant stay.

This is a top class guest house run by lovely couple, Glenalmond house pretends to be guest house but is way better than many hotels.
Jimmy and Fiona were the perfect host and the amazing breakfasts, a beautiful room and a luxurious bathroom.
I would recommend this guest house evey time and will difinitely be visiting again.
Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable and making us feel welcome

Firstly let me say that the Glenalmond website does not do it justice - it is actually much nicer than it looks!

I received a nice welcome from the hosts and was provided with all the information I required.

There are two types of room - deluxe or standard. I stayed in a deluxe room twice but did get a sneak peak at the standard and found it to be pretty nice too.

My room had been recently decorated - with taste and style according to the era of the original house. The curtains are dramatic and thankfully also keep the light out. There was a grand 4 poster bed and sumptuous new carpet on which you just have to walk barefoot. The en-suite was small but perfectly formed (no bath, just shower).

With regard to the noise from the main road, my bedroom (room 1) was on the ground floor, directly facing the driveway. To be honest, the noise of traffic did not really bother me (and I am quite sensitive to noise) but rather the traffic from the hallway was more of a problem. With the ground floor rooms being so close to the breakfast room, I could hear the clanging of crockery and cutlery as well as early morning conversation. Do not stay on the ground floor if you would like a lie-in! I have stayed on the first floor also - this is much much better (facing the back garden).

The breakfast room is, again, decorated in a tasteful, classy manner. I particularly liked the fact that you order your breakfast the night before so everything is perfect and on time in the morning. The quality of food (and hot chocolate! - very rare) was excellent. Incidentally, if you choose to bring some hot food back to the house for an evening meal, you must eat it in the dining room (which is fair enough).

I do have a few niggles though.. and they are as follows:

- I was welcomed to help myself to a wineglass from the dining room which I did.. but this was not cleared away at all during my 3 night stay.

- I thought the pillows were a little too lacking in oomph! Bit too flat for my liking, especially in contrast to the luxury of the room.

- On my second stay, a previous guest's used towel remained in the bathroom.

- As a single occupant, I did feel as though I did not hold as much priority when initially booking my room.

In summary, a friendly, comfortable place to stay - only 20 mins walk from the town centre with plenty of buses should you be feeling lazy!

We spent a few days at the Glenalmond last month. The room was very nice. Very new, the place had either just been reburished or converted. The bathroom was typical UK size but all brand new, looked like it was straight out of a design magazine. The hosts were very nice and the breakfast was ample and good.
Our room was a bit noisy, the twin on the ground floor is right on the small parking area which is right on the street, and the street is fairly busy. I also overheard the people that seemed to be in the room directly above ours having the same complaint. The busy street is a bonus in other ways - the bus stopped just up the street making it very easy to get to Princes street and the attractions.

  • Liked — The room was updated and clean.
  • Disliked — The room lock was bizarre and had to be fiddled with each use, and you had to turn the key to lock the door from inside.
