We had a lovely room that accommodated our family of five with room to spare. It was a bright, cheery room with flower boxes outside the windows. The rug was a little worm, and the ensuite bathroom was a little tight, but for the price it was to be expected. We were very pleased with the service. The breakfast was the best. There were five choices and when we had special requests within the choices they were accommodated with no problem. (My favorite was the fresh fruit, which was cut up in a bowl with juice and seemed to vary day to day.)
We could walk into New Town or Old Town but with our group ranging from ages 10 to 75 we often opted to ride the bus as it was within a block of the front door. We also opted to take the bus the Leith one day and it went directly from our closest stop.
There is a laundrette close by, which was helpful as we were in our second week of traveling.
(One of my daughters didn't pack a warm enough jacket. There area a number of thrift shops in the next block and we found a good warm coat very cheap. )

  • Liked — Location. It was a quiet street.
  • Disliked — The carpet was worn and the bathroom was tight/small.

This is a fantastic place to stay. Within easy walking distance (15 mins) to centre or a bus stop almost outside front door! (Edinburgh buses are frequent, on time and cheap!) plus lots of eateries and shops on door stop if don’t want to travel far.

Really quiet and cosy with all amenities and big warm rooms. Lovely welcome and house is well lit and inviting, with a pretty garden and bright decor inside. Very clean and room done every day. Excellent breakfast choice and flexible on early rises or skipping it for a lie in.

Friendly, helpful and homely and given a key to come and go as please.

Couldn't recommend it more and for the price is a right little gem! Will definitely be back.

We had a marvellous stay at The Amaryllis in October and would recommend it to others for an inexpensive, comfortable and friendly establishment. It is in a great location and you can walk to everything or be picked up for one of the Highland trips. Fantastic. There is also a local bus which takes you to Roslin Chapel for £1 !!!!! We will be back as we loved it. The rooms all have shower/wc and there is a good choice of breakfast menu.

We chose this guesthouse because it was inexpensive though fairly centrally located and we are happy to say we chose well.
Upper Gilmore Place is tucked away in a quite corner, not far from Tolcross, which is at the bottom end of Grassmarket. Within 10 minutes of leaving our room we were in the old town of Edinburgh.
The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. Plenty of information is available for vistors and we were offered further advice about tours in the town. Our room had a view of the Castle, TV, tea making facilities and was clean, bright and well furnished and heated. Though it was cold oldside it was never cold in the room. The en suite facilities were adequate; the bathroom was small but provided shower, toilet and sink. The shower was not particularly powerful but it was hot.
The breakfast was very well organised. They offer a choice of 6 types of breakfast which you book the evening before. Healthy options of fruit and yoghurt or scrambled egg on toast are offered along side a fry up. Service and food were both excellent.
Where this place really stood out is that we needed to leave on a very early flight and we were provided with an early breakfast option and they booked our taxi and left us details on the hall table. We arrived at the airport well fed and in plenty of time to catch our flight.
Edinburgh itself is compact, very busy and full of history. Every ghost tour claims to visit the most haunted place in Edinburgh. We did three different ghost tours, all different and all fun (though we didn't have any ghostly experiences). The guides enjoy their work and we learned a great deal about the city from them all.
There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants covering all different price ranges so it really does have something for everyone.
