We chose this guesthouse because it was inexpensive though fairly centrally located and we are happy to say we chose well.
Upper Gilmore Place is tucked away in a quite corner, not far from Tolcross, which is at the bottom end of Grassmarket. Within 10 minutes of leaving our room we were in the old town of Edinburgh.
The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. Plenty of information is available for vistors and we were offered further advice about tours in the town. Our room had a view of the Castle, TV, tea making facilities and was clean, bright and well furnished and heated. Though it was cold oldside it was never cold in the room. The en suite facilities were adequate; the bathroom was small but provided shower, toilet and sink. The shower was not particularly powerful but it was hot.
The breakfast was very well organised. They offer a choice of 6 types of breakfast which you book the evening before. Healthy options of fruit and yoghurt or scrambled egg on toast are offered along side a fry up. Service and food were both excellent.
Where this place really stood out is that we needed to leave on a very early flight and we were provided with an early breakfast option and they booked our taxi and left us details on the hall table. We arrived at the airport well fed and in plenty of time to catch our flight.
Edinburgh itself is compact, very busy and full of history. Every ghost tour claims to visit the most haunted place in Edinburgh. We did three different ghost tours, all different and all fun (though we didn't have any ghostly experiences). The guides enjoy their work and we learned a great deal about the city from them all.
There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants covering all different price ranges so it really does have something for everyone.
