Oct 3, 2007 | Trip type: Friends getaway

We stayed at these appartments when we took friends as a wedding present to the Scotland - All Blacks World Cup Rugby match. The female side of the party were well chuffed with the result but the male side not being Kiwis were less happy, although we had a great weekend.

Overall I would recommend the Grove St operation if there are a couple of couples in the party as it is far better than staying in a hotel as it is far more sociable.

When we arrived we were told we had been "upgraded" to the newer appartments down the road. Harris I seem to remember was their name. They were so new that building hadn't even finished and not all of them were fit to be occupied.

Still, that didn't bother us as we didn't hear any building work and when the guys turned up on Sunday to work, they waited till a very sociable 9.30 to start and weren't noisy. No doubt they will soon be finished

Plus Points
- Noise - very quiet indeed at night.
- Standard of fittings - good, modern styling and seemed far better than up the road in the original Grove St appartments.
- Parking - free secure, off road parking up at Grove St

Negative Points
- Nice balcony with a stunning view of the Western Approach Road...... ie just above it. It meant that during the day we had to keep the windows shut. To be fair, the windows appear triple glazed so when they are shut it is quiet, but as the appartment is south facing and the sun shines it, it does become quite hot.

For those staying there - i can recommend a restaurant round the corner 5 minutes walk - First Coast on Dalry Road. Off the beaten path so more of an Edinburgh local than a tourist trap. Good and imaginative cooking - well priced.

Would I go back to Grove St - yes if we were in a group.

We stayed here for 3 days during our trip to scotland. There are few pro's to these apartments but overall was an ok stay. These are located a decent walk from the main part of town which is a con for those wanting a good location. You got a good 15-20 minute walk atleast to either princes street or the royal mile. This property is old, clean but old. The floors creak like crazy - the first night i heard so much creaking of the floors from the people above me and beside me I thought there was someone in my apt.
The good things I can say about the apt is that the washer/dryer, while hard to figure out at first, is actually pretty helpful for the middle of your trip. They provide the detergent but not the dryer sheets so bring some if you want to use it. To send out your clothes to the cleaners via hotels you could be looking at a 50 pound bill as most charge like 2-4 pounds for just 1 pair of socks or one underwear. The apt also provides good cable for those who like to watch tv before you go to bed. Their cable gives you 100 or so channels to search. The place is clean for the most part also.
One thing to note - I would avoid their food if I was you. They give you bread, milk and cereal for your breakfast should you choose. I noticed as we were leaving that they put the milk cartons on the cleaning trolley and leave them there while they go around and clean, etc. I dont' know about you but i prefer NOT to leave my milk out for an hour or two and then put it in the fridge.
Overall I would say use this apt as a means of short term stay in your trip to do some laundry. The apt doesn't cost nearly as much as the hotels and you will save by being able to do laundry.

We had set our reservations for an extra day in Edinburgh (our original apartment was unavailable for the extra day) and found that the facility had booked us for the wrong day. We were supposed to stay at the EQ2 facility. While I guess we should be glad for a place to stay, we weren't given good options - lose the $500 we were quoted for the EQ2 by being a no-show or stay at the Grove facility. At $440 for the one night we found the Grove facility to be rundown. The floor is lifting in the bathroom and worn through in the kitchen, the walls and doors were filthy and the icebox was broken. The satellite TV didn't work very well on the small CRT screen - continuing to pause itself during the show. While the location was decent, we were hoping for a little more peace and quiet. Neighbors were coming and going and were noisy... not through their own fault but through the fault of the thin walls and doors.

this is a super hotel. apartment is clean and well kept. super to have so much space after staying a week in a central london hotel. great value for price, considering amount of space and all the amenities: kitchen, fridge, washer/dryer, stove, internet, etc.

the hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk west of the Edinburgh castle, a 10 minute walk south of the Haymarket train station and half a block from a bus stop. The neighborhood seemed nice both day and night. multiple groceries within 10 minute walk for food, etc.

minor issues: the floor of our room was very squeaky in places -- our room was 1 level up, above a driveway and it seemed there might be some issues with the floor because of that. the internet is free but not perfectly reliable: sometimes I could not get a connection. the clothes washer/dryer was a combined unit and didn't dry super effectively-- but was still very usable and made our trip so much easier.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment here for 3 nights in May '07. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were fairly small but spotlessly clean and have everything you need. It was great to have a kitchen and living room to relax in after a day of walking around Edinburgh in the rain! We thought it was a nice touch to have a 'breakfast pack' on arrival. Bread, butter, jams, milk, and cereal,
also tea and coffee. There's a Sainsbury's and a small Tesco's within
easy walking distance if you need to top-up or if you're going to cook. Washing machine & dryer were there and would have been a great help if we had stayed more then a few days. The apartment was maybe a little off the main drag, but that made for a quiet location, and all the main sites are within a few miles walk. If you're not up to walking all day then the buses are great at £1 each journey, or £2.50
for an all day ticket. Plenty of restaurants within 5/10 minute walk.
We would definately recommend Ghandi's (Indian - East Fountainbridge,
off Lothian Road), The Great Wall (Chinese - Lothian Road), and L'amour D'Italia (Italian - Fountain Bridge) - all were fantastic, and reasonably priced. We got a great rate through hotels.com, and when we go back to Edinburgh we will definately be staying here again.
