I’m sorry to read the negative reviews posted by other Tripadvisor members, and hope it doesn’t mean that the Greenside has declined. Certainly, those members’ experiences don’t match the very positive ones we had during our stay.
My family and I stayed at the Greenside Hotel in the Spring of ‘04, and found it to be very pleasant budget accommodation. (Rates from 25 to 65 GBP from the 2006 website). It offered excellent value.
Our rooms were large: the top-floor one I shared with my brother had two double beds; my parents’ on the ground floor had two singles in addition to a double; all had ample additional floor space, and room for chairs, desk, etc. The linens, bedspreads, furnishings and decor, while neither new nor “designer” selected, were comfortable, clean, and showed no visible wear. No problems with the bathrooms.
Breakfast was the typical full British breakfast, with a selection of cereal (porridge is -of course - available from the kitchen), tinned peaches, juice, tea/coffee to begin with. While we were starting on those, they cooked our hot breakfasts to order, offering the usual bacon, eggs, sausage, beans, tomatoes, toast, and - if wished - haggis. It was delicious; if you wish a low-fat alternative, you could always skip the bacon and sausage, and have your eggs poached or boiled. (But where’s the fun in that?)
Service from reception desk and breakfast staff was excellent: they were warm, immensely welcoming, and cheerful.
One caveat: as a heritage building, it doesn’t have a lift (elevator), and -especially with the building’s high ceilings - the upper floor rooms are a long way from the ground floor.
