I stayed at the George this weekend for my partner's birthday, and after reading some of the reviews on this site I was slightly anxious, but got a fantastic deal on gta hotels, so thought we'd try it.

We arrived 3 hours before check in, and luckily our room was ready, so we booked straight in (we had planned to just leave our luggage and come back later). We stayed in room 212 in the Adams wing, which has just been completely refurbished, although there was still a piece of wallpaper missing (although by the end of the day it had appeared and the corridor looked good as new).

Our room was spacious, and the bed was huge with beautiful Egyptian cotton sheets and lots of big squishy pillows. It has obviously just been totally redone, with big beige drapes and purple glass lamps, all very modern and beautifully designed. The bathroom wasn't huge but was clean and efficiently equipped.

The very best thing about this hotel is the communal areas (in contrast to the last reviewer's opinion!) The bar, Tempus 8, is very stylish with wonderful, well-priced cocktails, perfect for pre-dinner drinks and a night cap. We also ate our full Scottish breakfast in there, in their big leather booths with huge bright windows.

The location is perfect for everything Edinburgh has to offer, great bars on George Street (particularly The Dome opposite) and within walking distance to the Old Town and Castle. Of course, there are a couple of things I'd change - there were no bathrobes or minibar in our room, but the rest of the hotel more than made up for it. I would whole-heartedly recommend it and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Please feel free to email me if there's anything you'd like to know that I haven't covered.

Where should I start? We were excited about the George Hotel's location and recent renovations to this four star hotel implied we would not be disappointed. How wrong were we! We checked in with another couple we were traveling with and were given rooms next to one another.

Our room resembled a large walk-in closet. "Mind the Step" to the bathroom seemed funny at first, not in the dark at 2am. Tatty hardly described the room decor, window treatments and bath towels. Think 1970. I don't know how clean anything really was. The shower was a tub conversion on the fritz. Getting the right water temperature took five minutes and once done, we had to wiggle about to actually be in the stream of water. Funny double glazing on the windows made no sense... until a ton of drunk people poured onto the street below around 3am. But the windows did not keep any sound out. All in all, this room was HORRIBLE!

Our friends' room was HUGE compared to ours but in the same deplorable shape. Just more room to be more pathetic.

I am convinced they spent 15 M GBP on the one room pictured for the hotel's publicity!

Final note, upon checking in we were asked for our CC# for any extra charges, as the rooms had already been paid for. We have a pending charge of 25 GBP that I hope to not go into dispute over. We didn't order anything so there should have been no charge.

Do Not Stay In This Hotel unless you want to be completely disappointed.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel at the beginning of march for 3 days, I was a bit wary because of the reviews that I had read but we can say that we had a brillant room and the staff where very friendly. The breakfasts were lovely and no queues!! I dont know where all the others had been staying but we didnt experience any problems at all. The room was lovely and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in, plus the tea and coffee making facilities along with biscuits in the room - very nice touch. We would hope to stay again sometime and I would definately recommend it to friends and family without hesitation. The location is great just a couple of minutes walk from princes street and Harvey Nicks!! Hard Rock cafe across the road is good for something cheap and cheerful but we liked the Mussel & Steak bar at the grassmarket for something different. Enjoy your stay.

My wife and i have just returned from a 3 day break at the George. Like some other reviewers we had read negative reviews about the hotel and were expecting dour staff and sub standard accommodation. this could not have been further from the truth - all staff, including maintenance, waiting and reception, couldn't have been more courteous and helpful. The room was a delight - spacious with a giant bed and bordering on boutique on a grand scale. Location wise - excellent. Breakfast- more than ample (however bacon could be improved!). Would we recommend to others - undoubtedly. Well done George.

I stayed here with a group of friends as part of a weekend in Edinburgh - we got a good B&B deal, and you just cant beat the location of this hotel (although theres no parking so you need to plan ahead if you are bringing the car). We had 4 rooms - all lovely - decent size, comfy beds, nice (if compact) bathrooms. The Tempus bar has been refurbished and is really nice - a great place for a drink, I would definitely go there again. Breakfast the next morning was also good. We did have to queue to get in which was a bit of a pain. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would use this hotel again.
