After reading the reviews of the George Hotel on this website, I was anticipating our stay the hotel with more than a little trepidation. I had secured a great rate of £79 including English breakfast, and I thought this was amazing value considering this was during the first weekend of the Festival Fringe (and as a comparison the Travelodge is charging around £100 for a room without breakfast and they even charge you to store your bags!!). Therefore I was prepared to risk the hotel not being very good. I had been in contact with the Manager previously and found his responses very reassuring, and when I called the hotel on a couple of occasions the staff I spoke to were really helpful.
The public spaces of the hotel were lovely, recently refurbished and so no complaints at all. Also the restaurant and bar which had only recently opened were stylish and totally in-keeping with a refined hotel.
Obviously the public spaces in the non-refurbished part of the hotel are a little tired and scuffed. By no means the worst case I have experienced in a 4 star hotel though. Even the Savoy in London is rather faded and knocked about in the corridors etc, so I take it as an occupational hazard of a landmark hotel.
Our room was really large with a nice view overlooking George Street and with a glimpse of the castle! The furnishings were obviously a little old, but by no means did it detract from our stay. At least the room had classic furniture and this showed its age much better than other hotels where terribly dated furniture made for a depressing stay. The bathroom was large and everything worked well. I can imagine that when these rooms are refurbished they will be absolutely fantastic, the proportions and the high ceilings will make for a room experience to match the Balmoral. My Parent’s room, a twin, was quite a bit smaller than ours, but still above average compared to a typical Marriott for instance, and again the bathroom was large. Both rooms had new flat screen TVs. Obviosuly the rooms overlooking George Street are a little noisy (especially on the Saturday night) but again no worse than other city centre hotels. The rooms could benefit from air conditioning, but it was an unusually warm Edinburgh we found on this visit. The breakfast included in our rate we found more than satisfactory. We did have to queue on the first morning, which frustrated us at first, but once we got inside, there was plenty of choice, maybe not up to Marriott breakfast standards, but not far off.
The location is great, close to the shops and restaurants and good for Waverley Station. In fact if this hotel had a swimming pool, I would say it could rival the Balmoral when it is all refurbished. I did not see inside one of the refurbished rooms, although we did sneak a peek at the new wing, and from the impressions of the corridors etc, I would guess the rooms are very well done, there was an air of elegance but with a nicely modern finish.
So all in all we were more than happy with our stay. I would not hesitate to return and would love to see it when it is totally refurbished. I am usually pretty hard to please, so nobody is more surprised than I am that I enjoyed the stay so much. If the hotel had been really terrible, I would have thought we got what we paid for; as it was we got so much more.
