In terms of location, the George Hotel is ideal, within walking distance of most of Edinburgh's main sights; George Street is the most stylish of the city's main shopping streets.
Check-in was a little slow, but staff on reception were friendly. The room was at the back of the hotel, so there was no view. However, it was of reasonable size and was adequately equipped. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The en suite facilities were spotlessly clean but the lack of a proper towel rail was odd and the shower was underwhelming. The decoration of the bedroom was somewhat bland and didn't really bring out the character of what is a very fine Georgian building, but the hotel has at least one very appealing function space.
The breakfast buffet was adequate, though the texture of the scrambled eggs was an interesting combination of the rubbery and the crunchy; few places get them right.
We tried to have drinks in the Tempus bar and our party placed two separate orders with two different waiters. After (respectively) 25 minutes and 15 minutes' delay, during which our attempts to attract attention were rebuffed, nothing had arrived; we left. It wasn't especially busy, with several free tables. We may have been unlucky, as the service was markedly better there a few months prior to this visit.
The rack rate for a standard room in the George is over £320, which suggests delusion on the part of management. Their desire to charge 50p per minute for wired broadband and 70p a minute for local phone calls rather confirms that impression. This place is decent value at somewhere between £100 and £130, which is what most people seem to pay.
