“Great little hotel-lovely staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013 via mobile

I have just returned from a 1 night stay here with friends. We had a twin & family room both of which were clean, spacious & had everything we needed. Caroline on reception was extremely friendly & accommodating-makes a nice change for staff to take an interest in your stay, you don't get enough of that these days!

Breakfast was nice & again the staff were very friendly & attentive. The hotel location was good, about a 15 minute stroll to Princes Street.

I would definitely stay here again & will recommend to friends!

Thanks for a lovely stay!

We stayed at the Edinburgh City Hotel for a week between 31/3-07/04. The hotel is in walking distance from the Grassmarket , The Castle, Royal Mile and Princess Street. There is a bus stop just around the corner, Supermarket nearby and everything you need is really Close.
The room we stayed was very quiet and warm, and the bed was very soft. We had hot water all the time, room service and facilities for tea and coffee.
We can't say enough for how helpful the staff at the reception was. We are very happy for our choice and if we visit again beautiful Edinburgh we will definitely stay here again and inform any possible future visitors.
Thank You for making our stay really beautiful(we had the best night sleeps after all day walks around the city).

Room Tip: Our room was not facing the road and it was very quiet but i guess all the rooms must be quiet.

We are currently on our last night here and have had a lovely stay. Our family room was v spacious, clean, modern and well decorated. Staff v friendly and helpful and Caroline on reception lovely and good sense of humour! Our youngest had to take regular antibiotics on our stay and it was no problem to store them in the reception fridge and retrieve them three times a day. Breakfast good, cooked breakfast if you want it and a decent buffet selection. Great sized beds and the sofa bed which our kids (6 and 9)
slept in was a good size and a foam mattress, so no nasty springs poking out! Good location, 5 mins from grass market, 10 to Royal Mile and castle.

Pre-kids we have stayed in more expensive hotels, but the room we had here and the service matched anything we have experienced before and the hotel is cozy and family friendly, not too big to be snotty about themselves or to get lost in!

We have had a lovely stay here, thanks very much!

We stayed here as a party of 8 (4 couples) during Easter weekend and had an excellent stay. Staff very helpful both at reception and in the breakfast/dining room.
Food was excellent both at breakfast and when we had dinner in the evening.
Approximate 15 minute walk to the grassmarket area which of course is adjacent to the Royal Mile.
Al in all our expectations were more than met - will definitely choose this hotel again when we are back in Edinburgh.

Room Tip: 411 was the largest room from the four rooms that were booked

We stayed for 3 nights and the staff were excellent, especially Christina who always seems to be working. Good location. Enjoyed breakfast the only complaint would be that the croissants were burnt for all 3 mornings. We found our double bed very small and the pillows were not the most comfortable so asked for 2 more which helped. Parking is practically nonexistent which is quite frustrating if you have a car. But I have to say again the staff, from the manager in the breakfast room, restaurant staff, housekeeping to the receptionists, were all brilliant!

Stayed recently with 2 friends and we would definetly return.Warm clean rooms, quiet (ask for rooms to the back of the building) ,friendly staff and breakfast well worth the £7 deal when booked the night before.Number 35 bus from Edinburgh airport drops you just across the road-takes about 50 mins and costs £1.50 .City centre within walking distance but local buses 10 and 16 will take you to the Waverly station end of Princes St.Plenty of good bars and restaurants around Grassmarket but hotel dinner is very good (their fish and chips was fab and very reasonably priced). Our only grouch was that the mirror and the hairdryer were placed too far apart. We loved this hotel as it has character and would highly recommend it .

Room Tip: We requested rooms on the upper floor to the back of the building and it was really quiet.

I've been blessed and privileged to travel all over the world and thus, have stayed in hundreds of hotels. However, _this_ hotel is one I will never forget, for several reasons. It's very historic. Situated in "Old Town Edinburgh", the hotel occupies a beautiful, old building that long ago served as St. Mary's Maternity Hospital in the 19th century. The main entrance to the hotel is actually in a cobblestone enclosed courtyard, not the original front doors to the former hospital. We felt very safe there. The adjectives "quaint" and "charming" immediately come to mind. The staff is superb; extrememly helpful (in booking tours or calling for a late-night pizza for guests) and go out of their way to ensure your every request/need it met. _Caroline_, who attended the front desk throughout most of our stay, is warm, delightful, friendly, and anxious to assist guests in anything they request or need. I felt truly sad to say goodbye to Caroline when we departed because she had become more like a friend than just a hotel supervisor. Being located in Old Town, one can easily walk up Castle Hill to the iconic Edinburgh Castle and the beginning of the Royal Mile. The room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, and Housekeeping never hesitated to immediately and graciously bring "more towels" (it rained every day we were in Edinburgh). The combination of this hotel's excellent location in Old Town, its quant and charming edifice, secure courtyard, Caroline and all of the friendly, helpful staff make it one of the most memorable hotels in which I've stayed. (Even the other guests were _very_ friendly!)

Room Tip: If possible, ask for a room overlooking the main street on which the edifice sits. It's fun to...
