My wife and I stayed at this hotel for three nights in July 2006. Our room (211) was more like a mini-suite. It was exceptionally large and roomy with a king-sized bed, and there was a small, separate room with a double bed for our son. The room overlooked the street which was a little noisy, but we slept well. A fireplace with a beautiful Adam mantle was an outstanding feature. The room had a tea table and three comfortable upholstered chairs. In addition, there was a dressing table and armoire. A small refrigerator in the armoire was stocked with complimentary bottles of water. There was a coffee/tea pot with a selection of tea and coffee and complimentary shortbread cookies. The bathroom was large and had a heated towel rack. The concierge was very good at arranging for taxis and at answering questions. My son and I used the pool twice. We found the pool and health club area spotlessly clean. Excellent restaurants were just across the street. The only fault I found was that the comforter was worn and needed replacing.

  • Liked — Large room with separate room for child; great restaurant and shopping area just steps away
  • Disliked — Bed comforter was well worn and needed replacing

Stayed here for two nights, staff were trainees but very friendly, concierge was fantastic always willing to help. We were not in the new wing but our room was big enough, clean and had a half view of the castle which was good. Only downside, was very hot and stuffy during the night and that window did not open very well. They have a mini bar but only stock it with 2 bottles of water and ours seemed to have been half drank by the time we had got there. Thirsty maids??? We shall never know. All in all it was a pleasant stay but im glad i didnt pay full price for the room, if you thinking of booking, ring up and ask to be put in the new wing, it looked much better.

I stayed in this hotel for one night on business. The room was grim, poorly equipped, dirty and cold. I asked to be moved but was told there were no other rooms available. I actually went out for most of the evening to avoid being in this place. I was disturbed by my uncomfortable bed and traffic noise all night and then could not be seated for breakfast for half an hour at 7.30am the next morning. I began waiting in the lobby but that was full of smoke.

Not the best way to spend a business trip and all for the princely sum of £126. I wrote to complain afterwards and got a standard reply. They did at least have the courtesy to respond, but I get the impression little is going to change here. I wouldn't return under any circumstances.

My partner and I booked into the Roxburgh on a dismal day and found the staff to be friendly, helpful and efficient. I suspect that the 'rudeness' encountered by some other respondents on this site stems from a cultural misunderstanding. The Scots humour tends to be rather dry and could conceivably be interpreted as mild insolence. Personally, I prefer this to practised, insincere, 'have nice day'-ness.

Our room (in the old wing) was clean, comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was excellent (incidentally, there are fried eggs, but you have to request them to be cooked for you, as they do not keep well in the heated containers). The gentleman in charge of the dining room was attentiveness itself, and staff kept our tea and coffee replenished without being asked.

I would not hesitate to recommend the Roxburghe, and hope to visit there again.

Having arrived at the hotel from an early flight, we were told our room was ready which was great.

Our room overlooked the courtyard so no bin lorries there, and not over the function suite so no disco there. The room was better than I had anticipated but it was very dark, we had to have all five lights, the window was the small in size and only opened 2 inches. The problem came when we realised the heating did not work. After much tooing and froing with the concierge who was really helpful, we were given an oil filled radiator which did heat the room adequately but felt that the problem should have been sorted out before we arrived. We were told maintenance does not work at weekends and as the hotel was full we could not be moved.

We did not try the breakfast as there are plenty of restaurants in the area who provide the same at half the cost.

It did take a while to be served in the lounge with drinks but what is the hurry anyway. We were quite happy to sit there having afternoon tea all afternoon.

I would recommend this hotel for its location to Princes Street and all the sights.

I would say dont pay the rack rate, if you can get a discounted rate all the better but it is not worth the £140 per night they ask for.

As soon as they can iron out the few niggles that seem to appear the better.
