We were booked in at the Roxburghe on a New Years Package arriving on the 30th December and returning on the 2nd January 2005. The Hotel has a lovely warm and welcoming feeling on entering and we were greeted by extremely helpful staff who soon made us feel at home. Special mention has to go to David the concierge who sorted out the hiring of highland dress for my partner and could not have been more helpful having to return to the shop twice before we got the correct fittings!!?? (too much good Christmas living to blame I think). Having read previous reviews on this site, I have to say that we have nothing but praise to pass on, the careful thought and planning that went in to organising our package was excellent with lovely meals and a fabulous highland ball arranged on New Years Eve, which half of Edinburgh seemed to have supported as well as us mere tourists! Our room overlooked the square and was a really lovely room, very spacious with a good size bathroom and a very friendly young man who cleaned our room each day who worked extremely hard to leave us in the maximum of comfort. The swimming pool although small was an added bonus and the sauna was VERY hot!
We cannot wait to return again and anyone who has ever been up in Edinburgh will tell you there is NO other place in the world like it to celebrate hogmanay! Happy New Year!

Expensive for what it is

This is a nice enough hotel but expensive for what it is. We booked two deluxe rooms but ended up with one deluxe and one ordinary (difference was minimal though!). We stayed here in Sept 2004. There was a wedding on that day but it didn't cause any problems. Check your bill carefully - they added breakfast on to ours and when we went to sort it out we were told that they couldn't issue a 'cancelled' invoice but that the cost would not be charged. Not the way I would have liked the matter to have been dealt with! All in all a pleasant enough place though.

This was our second visit to this hotel, the first being our honeymoon. We decided to go back for our first wedding anniversary. Staff were great, upgraded us to the suite we stayed in first time. Facilities are excellent, nice swimming pool and the beauty treatments aren't too expensive. Location wise you can't get much better - Princes Street for shopping and George Street for a good night out. If, like us, you are taking the Airbus into Edinburgh the stop is very close to the hotel. Would recommend it.

This hotel was booked for us by a tour company with which we did a 7 day tour of Scotland. Although we had some misgivings due to some of the reviews found here, we nevertheless decided to book our extra night in August 2004 in Edinburgh at this location.
It worked out fine. No complaints at all.

As others have pointed out, the location is fantastic. The Edinburgh Festival book fair was at our front door. Shopping on Prince St. and George St. footsteps away. Three great cafes/restaurants across the street. The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle 15/20 minute walk. Waverly Station was a 10 minute walk.

Our stay was during the Edinburgh Festival and Tattoo, so I had some concerns about my extra night's reservation being screwed up - no problems. The reservation was there and we stayed in the same room we had for our tour.

The room was satisfactory. Even had a refrigerator - as well as the usual 4-star accoutrements - iron, pants press, hair dryer, and coffee maker (hot water pot - not a brewer). The room was clean and the beds were comfortable.

As was typical in the four other hotels we stayed in on this trip, ventilation left a lot to be desired. No air conditioning (the apparent norm is Scotland). The one window certainly helped, but with no air return or cross ventilation, the room was warm and stuffy.

The staff was helpful, if somewhat officious (slightly less warm and friendly than the other hotels in which we stayed). The concierge was helpful and friendly.

The lifts all worked :-)
The breakfast buffet was good.

The hotel was not cheap, nor were meals - but it was Festival and Tattoo time - and the rates were not out of line of others in which we stayed (although our last night was spent at the Glasgow Airport Ramada - where the room was comparable but about 40 percent of the price of the Roxburghe.

All-in-all, great location, high price, but no problems..

My new wife and I spent July 23rd to Aug 1st at the Roxburghe and loved the hotel and staff. I also read the reviews posted here and flew out a little concerned. The hotel was all that we were looking for and more. The rooms were well equipped and the newer gym and pool made it complete. This is a great downtown location.
