“Great stay at this well located hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

My Girlfriend and I stayed here over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Arriving late on Friday night, check in was smooth, although I was charged a £100 pre authorisation charge, which was not explained by the night manager. Aside from this the hotel itself was very comfortable. The rooms are well finished and the bathroom is large given the age of the building. The staff are helpful and courteous. The hotel is exceptional value for money. It is not quite as refined as somewhere like The Balmoral but it is not far off. Really enjoyed our stay and would strongly consoder staying here again in the future.

This was a 'lucky dip' choice through Expedia and we could not have picked a better hotel for the price. The location was really good towards the west end of Princes Street, so handy for shopping, restaurants and the castle with the Auld Toon. The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful, with the rooms being very comfortable and well decorated. The one drawback was the WiFi was hit and miss, depending upon where you are in the hotel.

Room Tip: ask about the WiFi reception

Just about to check out after a one night stay. Staff are exceptional and the room was perfect. The hotel is in a great central location with easy access to Edinburgh's highlights.

I've stayed at the hotel twice and would have to say the newer rooms at the back of the hotel are much quieter. Due to the location you do get a lot of traffic noise and once the pubs empty it can be shouty if your room is on the front road.

We stayed for two nights in the Adams suite and loved it!!! Big comfy bed, spacious bathroom and big Windows letting in lots of light.
The bar staff were amazing, drinks well priced and the food in the restaurant was of a very high standard.
Overall we were very happy and would 100% recommend to others.

The Roxburgh lived up to expectations. It wasn't cheap, but then neither is Edinburgh - if in doubt, try parking in the city centre for a day - but many aspects of what was on offer reached a high standard. The hotel restaurant was excellent, the service and food was superb. The room we had was modern and spacious and the staff were kind and friendly, so the hotel's four star rating is deserved. We stayed for three nights and would return again if another special 'deal' became available. Just remember: when in Edinburgh loose change is not an option.

Room Tip: If booking through a third party make sure the room you get matches the size of the room booked.

We went for a short break in Edinburgh, to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and stayed at the Roxburghe for two nights. We had arranged to pay for an upgrade to our room and when we arrived the male receptionist who booked us in was excellent. We left our luggage and went exploring the city.
When we returned we asked the concierge - Paul - to recommend a really nice restaurant for dinner that night. Not only did he recommend The Grain Store (subject of a different review) but he even made us a booking.
Our upgraded room was really nice - until we found out that we couldn't get hot water out of the shower. A call to reception was met with, "We'll send someone up straight away." Unfortunately, their idea of 'straight away' and ours was different - especially as we were getting ready to go out for dinner. After the second request a maintenance man came and said he couldn't sort it, as the valve had gone; so we'd have to change rooms. We got a call from reception to tell us that they had been informed by the maintenance man that he couldn't fix our shower, so they would have to move us.... hadn't we just heard that from the man himself?
Again, their sense of urgency didn't match ours and we were increasingly aware of being against the clock to get ready. We were eventually moved to a smaller room next door, which had hot water from the shower and my wife started to get ready. We were also given a bottle of wine, for the inconvenience of being moved. I turned on the television whilst she was in the bathroom, only to find it didn't work properly.
On our way out we informed reception of the faulty television and they said they would get it sorted whilst we were out. They didn't! The following morning we mentioned it again only to be condescendingly told that we may not be turning it on properly, but they would get it checked. After another lovely day out we came back to find that the television still hadn't been sorted. A call to a female receptionist was met with the same view - that we didn't know how to turn the television on. This was in spite of us telling them that the television came on but pixelated. Begrudgingly they said they would send a maintenance man - and we met Alex.
He was superb; asked us to show him the problem and straight away said the set was faulty. Within minutes he had replaced it and checked the new one was okay. He was very personable and told us a lot of the history of the hotel.
We had pre-booked tickets for the theatre that evening and, having seen on the website that the hotel did a pre-theatre dinner, we booked for that. This wasn't what we've experienced as a pre-theatre dinner before and we had a very average, overpriced, dinner. Things didn't start well when I saw a hair floating in my glass of water - not helped by the waiter's comment of, "Well spotted."
When checking out I refused to pay for the 'upgrade' as it didn't match our expectations and this met no resistence.
In summary, this is a lovely hotel that needs to pay attention to the detail. The welcome was good, the service from the concierge, especially Paul, was excellent and the service we received from Alex was excellent. The response we received to any problems left a lot to be desired and, we found later, there are far better options for a pre-theatre dinner in Nicholson Street.
