The Roxburghe is a solid, slightly old-fashioned hotel in a delightful location on Charlotte Square in the New Town. Room well furnished with quality fittings. Breakfast was first-class, with the cooked breakfast ordered via a waiter rather than collected from a buffet table. Expensive, though, at £17.50 and there isn't an option to have a 'continental' breakfast at a lower price. Coffee was strong and fresh. If you can get a lower rate via a booking website here, it's very good value for the centre of town and will not disappoint. The public areas are particularly attractive and compare well with the much more expensive Caledonian just round the corner. Beware, though, that car parking on the square is charged from 8.30 a.m. and is limited to 3 hours, so unless you know your way around, you end up having to put the car in the outrageously priced NCP place behind the castle.
