The Roxburghe is a solid, slightly old-fashioned hotel in a delightful location on Charlotte Square in the New Town. Room well furnished with quality fittings. Breakfast was first-class, with the cooked breakfast ordered via a waiter rather than collected from a buffet table. Expensive, though, at £17.50 and there isn't an option to have a 'continental' breakfast at a lower price. Coffee was strong and fresh. If you can get a lower rate via a booking website here, it's very good value for the centre of town and will not disappoint. The public areas are particularly attractive and compare well with the much more expensive Caledonian just round the corner. Beware, though, that car parking on the square is charged from 8.30 a.m. and is limited to 3 hours, so unless you know your way around, you end up having to put the car in the outrageously priced NCP place behind the castle.

Wow is all I can say. I'd read the reviews on here a week before I'd left and must say, i was a little nervous!
We phoned the Reservations department and the Manager put our mind at ease, saying that over 800 pass through the hotel per week and that one bad experience gets a review on here, but 799 people loved their stay! When put like that, it makes sense.
We gave it a go, paid the extra £50 for an upgrade to a feature room - well, it was so worth it! The new refurbished bedrooms are gorgeous, and well worth paying the supplement for!
The food in the restaurant is amazing ( I gather they have a new head chef! ) and the location has to be the best in Edinburgh.
Give it a go, you wont be disappointed!
I will definatley be returning!

We paid £175 for 2 of us for a 3 night stay, fantastic value.

The location was perfect in the heart of Edinburgh, just off a side street.

We had a cooked breakfast everyday, Sat & Sun it was a buffet style, Monday morning your order was taken for cooked breakfast but you could help yourself to everything else

The check in staff were charming, very helpful.

The room was superb, huge bathroom, double wardrobe, sony flatscreen with digital TV.

The swimming pool & gym was included in the price but we didnt have time to use it, but it looked great.

There was a wedding reception on the Sat night, the only disturbance we had was when everyone was outside waiting for taxis.

All in all 5/5.

I stayed in The Roxburghe Hotel for 4 days as part of a work course being held in the hotel. The Hotel is in a good location being close to Princes Street and some rooms have a view of Edinburgh Castle. The hotel boasts a 4 star category however my view is that it is more realistically a 3 star hotel with the potential to become 4 stars with a bit of work from management. There is a new wing and an old wing all of which is being re-furbished. The room I was allocated was in the new wing and had been re-furbished. The bed was comfortable and the room had a flat screen tv with some basic tv channels. There is no safe in any of the rooms which given the 4 star claim I found inconvenient. The bathroom was clean but throughout my stay there were never any toiletries placed in the bathroom, which for a " 4 " star outlet I found surprising. Other delegates did receive this. My shower was either lukewarm or cold with occassional bursts of boiling hot water for 3 seconds. The hotel restaurant has the same menu all week and the food quality was poor. We ended up going out to Browns across in George Street one night and paid for this ourselves even although our company had paid for dinner in the hotel. Overall The Roxburghe has the potential to be a 4 star but needs to tighten up it's levels of service. The management need to ensure the basics are being covered such as toiletries and that the showers are in full working order, the menu needs to be more varied and the chef given some further cookery lessons i.e risotto should not be like overcooked unsalted boiled stodgy rice. Having said all this the hotel is not bad it just isn't that great either.

I stayed in the Roxburghe with my husband for 3 nights. It was our first time to Edinburgh and we were not disappointed with the city or the hotel. The hotel was great, the location is very central, just a few steps down the square and you are on Princess St the main street in Edinburgh. We were able to walk everywhere even at night to restaurants and bars. The hotel was very comfortable, the staff were extremely friendly and their buffet breakfast and full scottish breakfast were to die for. I'll definitely be going back to Edinburgh and I won't have to look any further for my accomodation.
