We got a great deal to stay here with Octopus, but reading some of the other reviews I was a little anxious about what to expect - overall though we enjoyed our 3 night stay here.

Location: The hotel is ideally located for exploring the city centre - just on the corner of both George Street and Rose Street - with Prince's Street just below - we were able to walk everywhere during our whole trip.

Room: We were first given a room on the first floor in the old part of the hotel. I was disappointed when we got in - it was small, with peeling wallpaper and the view was above the courtyard so literally 4 other walls. We were there just a few minutes when we realised we could hear the ambience music from the lounge below - through a crack in the skirting board!
So we were moved to a room on the 3rd floor, still in the old part - looking out onto George Street. It was lovely, if a little dated, but it was fresher than the other room with a nice bathroom and with much more room, which we needed for a 3 night stay - and a bigger bed. The room and bathroom were clean. There were some nice touches - a fridge with complementary water restocked each day.

Food: We only ever had breakfast here, which was lovely - plenty of selection and the service was good. We found the dinner menu a little out of our price range.

Customer Service: We found all the staff in the hotel helpful and courteous. We had a little trouble with room keys and the housekeeping, maintenance and concierge staff were all on hand to assist.

Pool: I had booked the hotel partly because of the leisure facilities. The pool is a decent size, and the sauna was fine too. The steam room was out of order during our visit. It isn't a luxury facility but was grand for a quick swim.

Overall I would recommend this hotel - because we were moved rooms. Its really well located and if you are looking for a comfortable base for your visit, it fits the bill.

This was my second stay on a business trip and I will probably avoid on any future trips to edinburgh.

I was initially put in one of the 'original' rooms which was a bit smelly, with faded furniture and a worn feel and asked instead to change to the newer wing of the hotel. The newer room was much nicer than the first.

The gym is a good feature of the hotel and being able to participate in the classes is a bonus, however I was also let down by the room service (who managed to get my order significantly wrong 2 out of 3 times).

The staff are very polite and do try their best however there are just a few fundamental kinks that need to be addressed before this hotel deserves its 4 star rating.

My husand and I booked the Valentine package to this hotel. When we arrived the upgraded room we had booked was not available. We were offered the classic double which was very small, and quite grubby. We did not receive our champagne, nor our dressing gowns and slippers even though we were told we would.

The food, however, which was part of the package was excellent and I would definitely recommend the restaurant.

Breakfast, which we had in our room, was luke warm, the cutlery was dirty, and they forgot the sugar and teaspoons.

The bill arrived and we found we had been charged for extra wine and liquours which we did not order, they also charged us for the car parking space, which we were given complimentary because of the mix up with the room.

The hotel itself is in need of a make over, there was peeling wallpaper and mould on the walls in the swimming pool area. We won't be returning to the Roxburghe.

The Six Nations Rugby Cup forced me out of one hotel, Radisson Edinburgh, into another for one night, MacDonald Roxburghe, and I cannot say that I was disappointed. On the whole, I thought that the hotel met its four star rating.

Staff informed me that the hotel was created in the 1890s when seven rather grand town houses were knocked through to create one even grander hotel. Indeed, the front section of the establishment is fairly impressive with its high ceilinged reception, lounge and dining room.

I cannot vouch for the accommodation in this older part of the building as I stayed in the newer portion (built at the end of the 1990s) at the rear of the hotel. While I was perfectly happy with my room, I could imagine that you might be slightly disappointed if you had handed over your hard-earned money expecting a soujourn in the historic 19th century part of the hotel. Nonetheless, you could easily address this issue by asking before you book.

Finally, as other contributors have noted, the location is really excellent for sight-seeing, shopping, business and transfers to the airport or the railway station. In short, this hotel has lots of pluses!
