I booked to stay at the Kildonan Lodge Hotel after reading the numerous reviews on tripadvisor. I was not disappointed and was only sorry to be staying for just one night. I will definitely be back.

Upon arrival, in the early evening, we were greeted by an extremely friendly and polite young lady, who gave us a thorough and helpful introduction to the property and the city. She also offered us a complimentary room upgrade which we were delighted to accept.

We had booked a triple room and the room we were given exceeded all expectations. I notice another reviewer perceived the rooms as small - ours was enormous. Well and truly more than enough space for the three of us - a huge double bed and king size single, a little writing bureau with fast wireless internet connection, a seperate sitting area and a decent size closet with full size mirror. There is, as other reviewers have remarked, a decanter of sherry on the fireplace and this was well received after our long drive from the lake district. Decor of the room is elegant and traditionally Scottish, and very clean and uncluttered. Bathroom is slightly small compared to the size of the room, but in no means inadequate and this definitely did not detract from the enjoyment of the room.

There is a lovely common lounge area with a well stocked honour bar, and the breakfast room is bright, light and airy. We had a cooked scottish breakfast and a vegetarian scottish breakfast with vegie haggis which was delicious. Staff at breakfast weren't overly chatty but sometimes that is quite nice in the mornings! Complimentary paper and a selection of toast, cereals, fruits and juices.

In terms of location, we actually walked into the city and it was a brisque twenty minute walk. Bus service seemed really good though - they were constantly wizzing by. In terms of value for money, friendliness and a truly enjoyable stay you cannot go past the Kildonan Lodge Hotel.

We spent Aug 19-22 at this B&B. Generally speaking we tend to shy away from B&Bs because of unpredictable accomodations and service and prefer higher end hotels. However, given the festivals in town, hotels like the Scotsman were incredibly expensive especially given that we would be ultimately paying in US dollars. In any event, Room 8 (the green room with bay window, fireplace and 4 poster bed on website) was great. It is much bigger than rooms you would find in European hotels much less a B&B. It was very clean and well attended to each day. Even though the room faces a street, it was not noisy...and I try to seek out the quietest places in hotels. The lounge/den/family room (whatever you call it where you live) downstairs with the honesty bar was very comfortable and well stocked. Staff are eager to help and had great suggestions. Do try the "New Bell" restaurant that is nearby. It is within walking distance and had a great variety of food. Did not eat at the Kildonan so cannot comment on that. There are many other B&Bs on the same street as the Kildonan and as we rode down the street I was completely relieved that we had found this place. It has the largest car park accomodations of any of the other establishments and looks the best maintained. The bus service is very convenient to and from city center. We would definitely stay here again. And by the way, if you're driving trying to find this place, know that the street names in Edinburgh change almost every block.

We stayed three days in the hotel and had one meal there.
Our room was spacious, very clean and with adorable furniture, even a small bottle of sherry to round up the great days we had in Edinburgh! Great breakfast offer as well, very friendly and helpful staff, excellent bus connection to the city centre.
Restaurant Food is prepared with a lot of dedication and love, the only very little remark I could make is that it's the only place where we had to pay a surcharge (of a few £) for paying with credit card (the restaurant bill only).

I used Trip Advisor as the basis for booking most of the hotels we stayed in during our 7 week European trip. We are fussy travellers but, in the main, I've found comments on Trip Advisor to be accurate and very helpful. However, this time we must have been unlucky.

We would not stay here again. The room we had did not represent part of a 4 star hotel that’s for sure. Our room was tiny – and I mean tiny! I know some European hotels can be tiny but this was miniscule! We were lucky to find room to put our 2 suitcases on the floor. The bathroom was very poor. Floor tiles were cracked and bits of the tiles were missing. The bath cum shower leaked all over the bathroom floor whenever we used the shower. Obviously staff were well aware of the problem because there was a sign about taking care because of a slippery floor. Impossible for the steam to escape from the bathroom – even the toilet paper became damp. We are Australians and don’t waste water with long showers. There must be other, better places to stay in Edinburgh thats for sure!

Management response from KildonanLodgeHotel, Manager
(Management representative)

We appreciate all guest feedback received as we constantly strive to improve the quality of our facilities and also ensure our guests have an enjoyable experience so that we maintain our friendly reputation. However I am at a complete loss with this rather unfair review and it makes me wonder whether these guests are confused with another hotel they stayed at on their travels after looking at their previous comments on the site.

The guests stayed in April in an Executive King room - there are many photos of this burgundy room posted on Trip Advisor along with great reveiws. I completely understand that every traveller has their own expectations and opinions - but I don't understand how they found the room miniscule? They are large rooms on the ground floor containing super king beds and spa bath ensuites. As for the need to place luggage on the floor -all our rooms have luggage stands?!

The comment regarding the slippery floor is totally unjustified. All hotels and public areas containing tiled floors must display a notice to guests to use the bath mat provided to comply with health and safety standards. You will find this in most hotels.

We are a small boutique hotel and have been awarded 4 stars by Visit Scotland/Scottish tourist board for many years running. We pride ourselves on providing excellent service and a friendly 'home away from home' atmosphere to all our guests. We make every effort to get to know our guests during their stay so that if there is a problem they can feel confident in approaching us to discuss. I am very dissappointed that the guests never approached me or another member of staff during their stay to voice their concerns as we certainly would have endeavoured to rectify these immediately to ensure your stay with us was enjoyable.

We spent a lovely wedding anniversary weekend in Edinburgh, staying at the Kildonan Lodge.

We were given a cosy room at the back of the main house which was clean and bright and had all the amenities we needed.

We'd read the reviews about the sherry but hadn’t appreciated that the decanter was filled daily - a nice touch!

We decided to beat the traffic and arrived before 11:00 in the morning. Although we weren't able to check in until 14:00, leaving the car in their own private car park was not a problem and we were given advice on bus numbers into town and recommendations about what to see. We were also warned that the castle would be closed later on in the day for a concert in the evening, which helped us in shaping our itinerary.

The first evening we decided to eat in the restaurant. The food was excellent and we were well attended to. Breakfast is freshly made to order with a variety of hot and cold selections – all very tasty.

Less than 10 minutes walk from the Lodge is a small shopping centre which includes a large Sainsbury’s supermarket, which can make a change from eating out. There are a number of buses which go to the centre from just outside the Lodge and the daily ticket which allows you to travel on the buses all day is well worth considering.

So would we come back to Edinburgh? Very likely. Would we stay at Kildonan Lodge? Most definitely.
