I stayed at Kildonan Lodge earlier this year, on a complete whim as I had to free weeks and nothing to do with them! I booked it almost at the last minute, but had quite high expectations as my AA hotel guide book gave it 5 diamonds.

The hotel certainly lived up to that grading! On arrival (on the airport shuttle bus) I was greeted by a very friendly transatlantic gentleman who helpfully told me about local transport and costs of this, recommended some local shops and restaurants and showed me around the hotels facilities (including a cosy lounge with an honesty bar and elegant dining room).

My room was lovely, furnished in soothing cream and plum colours with a very comfortable double bed (always something I like), with luxurious velveteen curtains. There was a very spacious and well-lit bathroom with plenty of towels (nice soft ones) and even a Jacuzzi bath (mmmmmm lovely :))! In addition, there was a good choice of hot beverages (regular/decaf coffee and different teas), plus mineral water, biscuits and even a small decanter of whisky. I felt very pampered.

Breakfast was substantial and delicious, with a choice of cereals/
fruit or porridge to start and a variety of cooked dishes. It really set me up for the day.

One small niggle: Kildonan Lodge is quite a long walk from Edinburgh city centre (40 minutes approx). However, there is a bus stop very close by which takes you straight there, and it's only £2.50 for a day ticket.

I would definitely stay here again!

  • Liked — Friendly staff and beautiful comfortable bedrooms.
  • Disliked — Quite a distance from the city centre.

Quiet, despite being on a main road. My brother and I stayed three nights last month, and our rooms were clean, with decently sized bathroom, and comfortable. The staff were helpful and the breakfasts were quite nice. Best of all: the lounge. High ceiling, fireplace, worn but comfy, overstuffed furniture, and an honesty bar. Nothing like returning at the end of a long day and chatting amongst selves and other guests while enjoying a drink or two. . .or three. At less than pub prices.

There are no surrounding shops, which was the only drawback, but it was a great place to stay and enjoy Edinburgh.

  • Liked — Honesty bar, comfortable rooms.
  • Disliked — No nearby shops.

My husband and I had originally booked another B&B but their renovations had not been completed when we arrived so the owner there had already arranged another reservation for us at the Kildonan at the same rate. I agree with the other reviews. We were given a large room with a spa bath. We had a rather large flat screen tv and we also had free wi-fi for our laptop. Also included was a beverage tray with sherry and shortbread biscuits, along with tea and hot chocolate. Sean, at the reception desk, was most helpful in advising us on restaurants we could walk to and info for the bus routes into and back from the city centre. The bathroom was large by UK standards and looked as if it had been updated in the not too distant past. Breakfasts were cooked to order or you can help yourself to the cereal and juice buffet. I liked the location, a mile or so from the city centre and away from the bustle a bit. There is ample parking at the back of the lodge. All in all, we were very satisfied and would definitely return if in Edinburgh.

  • Liked — Large room, large bathroom, free wi-fi
  • Disliked — No elevator

I booked this on the basis of previous reviews and wasn't disappointed.
It is an old converted mansion with huge rooms and free broadband internet access.
Shower room was newly fitted, although to be fair, I prefer a bathroom, but the smellies were nice and there is a plasma tv with freeview in the massive bedroom.
Breakfast (cooked) was great and it's definitely on the return list.

My partner and I have just come back from a weekend in Edinburgh and were really really pleased with the Kildonan Lodge Hotel. We stayed in the back lodge (room 2) and it really was a home away from home.

Upon arrival Sean was so helpful, telling us how to get around and giving us a card with bus numbers on it so we knew which to catch to get and from the hotel. He gave us a folder full of restaurant recommendations and offered to book one for us. The hotel is about 2 miles from the town centre and is easily reached by bus (currently £1.10 for a single journey or £2.50 for a day pass). Yes it might be away from the hustle and bustle but I was very thankful for that!

Our room had a massive King size bed, that could be separated into two singles if you needed it, some sherry and shortbread was waiting for us when we got into the room and also had the usual teas and coffees. There was a built in mirrored wardrobe and chest of drawers to unpack all your clothes. It was more like a bedroom at home than a hotel room and was so nice knowing we had that to go back to after a long day sightseeing. The en-suite bathroom was great too. I can’t comment on the rooms inside the main hotel, but these certainly did not look dated at all.

The lodge also has a small sitting room, with fire place and a book shelf with a large selection of books and games that you can borrow during your stay.

In the morning there was a large selection of food available for breakfast. The usual cereal and fruit choices (plus croissants!) from the buffet and various other selections from the menu including a full Scottish breakfast.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to stay in Edinburgh, a fantastic price, fantastic staff and a fantastic location. We will definitely be back.
