I stayed at Kildonan Lodge earlier this year, on a complete whim as I had to free weeks and nothing to do with them! I booked it almost at the last minute, but had quite high expectations as my AA hotel guide book gave it 5 diamonds.
The hotel certainly lived up to that grading! On arrival (on the airport shuttle bus) I was greeted by a very friendly transatlantic gentleman who helpfully told me about local transport and costs of this, recommended some local shops and restaurants and showed me around the hotels facilities (including a cosy lounge with an honesty bar and elegant dining room).
My room was lovely, furnished in soothing cream and plum colours with a very comfortable double bed (always something I like), with luxurious velveteen curtains. There was a very spacious and well-lit bathroom with plenty of towels (nice soft ones) and even a Jacuzzi bath (mmmmmm lovely :))! In addition, there was a good choice of hot beverages (regular/decaf coffee and different teas), plus mineral water, biscuits and even a small decanter of whisky. I felt very pampered.
Breakfast was substantial and delicious, with a choice of cereals/
fruit or porridge to start and a variety of cooked dishes. It really set me up for the day.
One small niggle: Kildonan Lodge is quite a long walk from Edinburgh city centre (40 minutes approx). However, there is a bus stop very close by which takes you straight there, and it's only £2.50 for a day ticket.
I would definitely stay here again!
