My husband and I got married at the Ellersly in August 2006. I couldn't have asked for better service from the Ellersly staff - I truely expected something to go wrong (doesn't it always at weddings?!?) but hand on heart not one thing went other than according to plan. From the first day I visited they were offered an excellent level of customer service, right through to the wedding and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff for us or any of our guests. The hotel has had a lot of work done on it, and my personal experience of both the standard rooms and the suites was that they were well-decorated and homey. The standard rooms are not the largest, but they are still perfectly adequate and have gorgeous bathrooms.

What sold it for me was that my maid of honour booked a standard room and they upgraded her to the other honeymoon suite free of charge without telling any of us as a surprise. In the middle of the Edinburgh Festival when they could sell that room for an awful lot more than my friend paid for it (since she paid standard rates) I think that's pretty good customer service.

It has a nice lounge and bar (which sells drinks at reasonable prices rather than hotel bar prices - I was shocked!), and a beautiful garden for sitting out in those summer evenings. It is a beautiful old building and though it is not in the immediate city centre it is right on a bus route and is only five minutes by bus right to the heart of the city. And the breakfast was cracking too!

Can't recommend it highly enough. I'll stop now before I gush any more! Seriously, I know it's not the cheapest hotel in Edinburgh, but I'd recommend here above the city centre hotels.

My friend and I recently stayed at Ellersly House (12/6-12/10) - the Hotel grounds are lovely and the lobby, lounge and bar area are nicely appointed. We ended up eating dinner in the bar area 3 of the 4 nights we were there just because the bartender Liz was so nice and engaging! Food there is great and reasonably priced. Much of the hotel staff we encountered is from Eastern Europe, not Scotland however. (Liz is Scottish). There were several issues with our room, a couple I did attempt to get fixed - but to no avail: Clogged shower drain, VISIBLE Mold/Mildew in bathroom and a continuously running toilet (I fixed that one myself). Incorrect bus info to outlying attractions, taxi rates, taxi to the airport not confirmed, melted lampshades, mattresses that felt like we were sleeping on the box springs alone, curling wallpaper, drywall patch over wallpaper, etc.

I did contact Hotel Ops once we were home to let them know my concerns - they take no responsibility/no apologies - incorrectly stated we were offered another room and proceeded to lecture me on how mold happens in just one day! No compensation offered either.
I wish I could recommend it to others, but for the price I felt it just wasn't a good deal (we had better accommodations at a B&B in Ireland).

Dank, dark, dirty, disgusting. Small cramped rooms. Used to be a Ramada but they gave it up. It was a dismal experience. The rooms were the tiniest ever and really dirty. Very unpleasant place.

We took a 3 week driving tour of Gt. Britain in June 2005 and are just getting around to responding. We spent one night at this hotel before flying down to London and back to the States, and so Bed & Breakfast was all that we needed. Our room was small and shabby but the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was definitely in need of renovation and it wasn't particularly clean either. We ate a room service dinner which was good and enjoyed their breakfast buffet. Staff were helpful and friendly but this hotel is definitely in need of a make-over!
