My husband and I got married at the Ellersly in August 2006. I couldn't have asked for better service from the Ellersly staff - I truely expected something to go wrong (doesn't it always at weddings?!?) but hand on heart not one thing went other than according to plan. From the first day I visited they were offered an excellent level of customer service, right through to the wedding and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff for us or any of our guests. The hotel has had a lot of work done on it, and my personal experience of both the standard rooms and the suites was that they were well-decorated and homey. The standard rooms are not the largest, but they are still perfectly adequate and have gorgeous bathrooms.
What sold it for me was that my maid of honour booked a standard room and they upgraded her to the other honeymoon suite free of charge without telling any of us as a surprise. In the middle of the Edinburgh Festival when they could sell that room for an awful lot more than my friend paid for it (since she paid standard rates) I think that's pretty good customer service.
It has a nice lounge and bar (which sells drinks at reasonable prices rather than hotel bar prices - I was shocked!), and a beautiful garden for sitting out in those summer evenings. It is a beautiful old building and though it is not in the immediate city centre it is right on a bus route and is only five minutes by bus right to the heart of the city. And the breakfast was cracking too!
Can't recommend it highly enough. I'll stop now before I gush any more! Seriously, I know it's not the cheapest hotel in Edinburgh, but I'd recommend here above the city centre hotels.
