“Fab Xmas Party Night with Overnight Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013 via mobile

Just returned after having an amazing time at the King James on one of their xmas party nights with overnight stay. The hotel is in the best location ever being a short walk from princes street or has direct access to St James Centre.

We were lucky to be given room 437 which faced onto the street right above the xmas tree. I am a light sleeper but did not hear any street noise whatsoever and the windows has excellent blackout curtains blocking all light from outside.

The cleanliness of the room was excellent and the room had everything you could ask for. The staff from the moment of check-in, to the staff at breakfast was very good & nothing was too much bother.

I will certainly be returning to this hotel, hopefully soon, and would have no hesitation on recommending to friends!

Keep up the good work King James, your doing an excellent job!!

This is our 2nd visit. Excellent location, close to shopping/restaurants & an inside entrance to the adjacent St James shopping centre/ John Lewis etc-so for shopping you don't even need to go outside if its cold & wifey was pleased.
Friendly staff. Excellent room at back of hotel was large, clean and quiet. We even had 2 TV's.
Bunk bed for our 2 yr old son. Free wifi actually worked and was easily accessible.
Good atmosphere both in hotel & in city.

Breakfast is awesome - excellent choice/high quality food. The supervisor lady was very welcoming to us (especially to our "gorgeous" son). She made our stay even better.

Car parking is cheaper if you pre-book. We used a Stenaline hotel deal.
Overall I would highly recommend this hotel & hopefully will be back for another stay soon.

Room Tip: Back of hotel is quieter.

Stayed here last December and could not fault it, however, this time was certainly not so good!

On arrival we were told that we were being given a free upgrade, bearing in mind that the last time we had a superior room overlooking Leith Street on the 6th floor, we thought this would be the same, however, to say my wife wasn't too happy is an understatement! Room 430 certainly was not the upgrade we were expecting, tiny, dark and dingy; it didnt help that we had to keep the curtains closed during the day as there were various groups of young guys haning about right outside our room. I went to reception to ask to be moved, but was told the hotel was full but they would contact the shopping centre security to move them on. Needless to say, that didn't happed and it was a gathering place for lots of groups at night too - even though I was told by the guy on reception that this wouldn't be the case!!

After quite a noisy night, and being woken up by the chamber maid at 8.45am to 'check the room' even though we were leaving that day, and again at 9.45am, we went down to breakfast.
It is clear that this place is majorly understaffed and the woman in charge is the grumpiest person you will ever encounter! We were seated and told someone would be over to take a drink and toast order shortly - 20 minutes later the order was taken and it took atleast 15 mins for it to come... we never got a pot of tea as they ran out of tea pots; possibly something to do with the mountain of dirty dishes stacked up on a unit as you walk in.

The food however did redeem them slightly, lots of selection and it was hot and tasty!

On the whole not the best stay and although its not the most expensive hotel in Edinburgh, its not the cheapest either - for a 4 star hotel, standards have certainly slipped.

Really need to buck up their ideas for me to consider staying here again!

The Thistle (King James) Hotel in Edinburgh has a great, city centre location with good access to relatively cheap parking, however we felt that the decoration work in the rooms & new carpets in the corridors is overdue.

We stayed from Thursday to Monday & it was good to be so close to Princes Street where the Edinburgh Christmas Market, etc. was in full swing.

Breakfast food was good with a large selection of options available but the weekend, breakfast supervisor didn't give the impression of being a morning person. Restaurant staff were helpful & courteous but unfortunately the supervisor on the Saturday & the Sunday morning wasn't the most pleasant of people. Given that the supervisor is usually the first person that residents meet when going to the restaurant for breakfast, it can give a bad impression of the breakfast.

Room Tip: Some rooms face out onto Leith Street where the main entrance to the hotel is situated. Edinburgh i...

Located around 15mins drive from the main Airport, this nice hotel has it all. Its biggest selling factor is its fantastic location....within the shopping centre. The hotel needs updating but the character is there. The Edinburgh Castle is within 15 minutes walk so is the National Museum. The Christmas Market is even closer. The restaurant was very good. Service was great and breakfast and dinner was all freshly made and delicious. There is so much to visit and you get all the information required from the reception desk who was very helpful too.

only 5 mins walk from the railway, with a bus-stop almost at the door.we liked the idea of coming out in the shopping mall. check in was pleasant and efficient, we were early ,,but there was a room ready, the room was small, warm and looked on to the front which was quite noisy- most of the night. The bar is very, comfy to sit in and drinks are comparitively priced. our deal included evening meal which was very nice and served by lovely, happy, and chatty staff. The bathroom/shower was small but funcionable. Only downside was --one of the most uncomfiest beds i have ever slept in.-- but that won't deter us from another stay.

Room Tip: since the front is quite noisy, opt for the back-- but then you'll not be entertained with the no...
