“Okay hotel, great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

I stayed here with my partner and toddler for a short break. Hotel is - to be honest - a little dated. Comfortable enough but a little frayed around the edges. Breakfast was usual buffet fayre; again pleasant enough if not exceptional. My only real complaint was that walls seemed a little thin; though I think my toddler disturbed my neighbours more than they did us!

However what puts this up to four stars is the staff - courteous and friendly throughout and really made a difference to our stay.

Also - location is excellent. A few minutes from Edinburgh Waverley station and within a few minutes walking distance of Princes Street.

The King James Thistle is right at the end of Princes Street - Edinburgh's famous shopping street and just across the road from the main railway station. Its in a shopping mall but don't let that put you off - the staff are helpful and the rooms are clean and well equipped. You can probably get a deal for your stay here and pay half price compared to the older more famous hotels, but you'll still be within walking distance of everywhere you want to see, so why pay more?

Room Tip: A room at the front will have a great street view

The location of the hotel is great being in the Centre of Edinburgh.

As a wheelchair-user I require an accessible room and I am very particular. Generally the bedroom was very good with a lot of space. Mostly, everything was within reach and there had been a lot of thought put into it in particular the finer details.

However, the food in the restaurant was TERRIBLE... it all tasted 'shop bought and warmed up'. Not what I would expect from a 4* hotel!!

We arrived Friday evening 6th September and were made most welcome by the reception staff. There was no delays or endless filling out of forms. We were processed in 2 minutes and advised of the breakfast times which is a very generous 7.30 am to 11am and check-out time 12 mid-day. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room and bed was clean and comfortable. The cooked buffet "all you can eat" breakfast or continental option with juices, cereals and so on was very extensive, filling and delicious. We did not have to eat again until the evening!

The location is perfect, 5 minutes walk from Waverely Station where the bus stop is located for the airport and within walking distance of all the major attractions. I contacted the hotel once I made the booking to ensure we secured a nice and quiet room which was provided without hesitation. The best way to reach the hotel is the Airlink 100 bus service. Tickets available at a kiosk at the bus stop outside the airport terminal building - £6 return - a no brainer. Get off at the last stop in Waverely Station and walk 5 minutes to the hotel. Places to eat - there is an excellent Wetherspoons called the Playfair in the Omni Centre on Leith Walk about a 5 minute stroll from the hotel with brilliant grub and booze as well as other restaurants in the same complex. I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear or side of the building are quieter but do as I say in the review - once you make...

Great location. Very pleasant, friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast with varied choice. Room was large (double) and clean.
The hotel is a bit tired and we didn't think it was worth the money. We have stayed in hotels in Ediburgh which had equal facilites, including location, and not as expensive. I wouldn't pay this price again unless really stuck.
We had a meal in the bar, the restaurant wasn't open yet, not impressed.

Room Tip: One at the back. The rooms at the front are at the road. When we were in for breakfast you could hea...

Stayed one night on business in August 2013. Hotel is part of the unsightly St James shopping complex in Edinburgh and like the shopping centre is badly in need of renovation. I have to say that the room I was given was fine consisting of a bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a lounge with a separate toilet off that. TV, free safety deposit box in room, tea/coffee making facilities, ironing facilities all available. As the room faced on to the busy Leith Street it was subjected to some noise during the night but there isn't much the hotel can do about that. The restaurant was ok but the bar is another of those areas that needs to be completely revamped. Lifts are available but on the day I was there only one of the two was working. The hotel staff were pleasant enough so no complaint there.

I am afraid that the external appearance of the hotel and the shopping centre lets the whole thing down and is not fit for the centre of Edinburgh. There are plans in place to demolish the entire site and build afresh - the sooner the better. In terms of location the hotel is good. Situated off the east end of Princes Street, near Waverley rail station and close to the airport bus drop off point. Within walking distance of all the main central Edinburgh attractions with lots of buses and taxis available if required.

Room Tip: As for a room at the back of the hotel way from the road.
