“Great location and good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights in November. We got a very good deal on the price, and thought the location was fantastic.Very handy to waverley train station and if you want to shop, the shopping centre which includes a John Lewis, is just literally below the hotel. It was also so handy for the playhouse theatre. It is not a luxurious or glamorous 4 star hotel, but it was really cosy and warm - v impt as the weather was a bit miserable for some of our stay, and it was comfortable, spotless and had everything you need. If you get a good price, would thoroughly recommend it for a short break in Edinburgh.

This hotel was chosen for a long winter weekend break and was perfectly located for shopping, sightseeing and restaurants. We very pleased with the size of room, furnishings and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was good and on second day we went to breakfast earlier and discovered its best to be early for breakfast before the majority of people arrive and queues build up at the self-service. The staff were courteous, efficient and friendly. Would stay there again if visiting Edinburgh. Nothing to negative to say.

Room Tip: The room we had looked out on to the street and we were hardly disturbed during the night though I...

Just returned from a long-weekend break in Edinburgh. The King James Hotel met all our requirements - very convenient central location offering easy access to Princes Street and Waverley Station and also direct entry to a John Lewis store and shopping mall without going out into the wintry weather!
We booked through Travelzoo and obtained an incredibly good deal. The reception staff could not have been more welcoming or more helpful at all times, likewise the cheerful restaurant personnel. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. We were upgraded to a large bedroom with adjoining lounge area and top-drawer (dual!) en-suite facilities with bath. Everything was spotlessly clean and the bed extremely comfortable. The bedroom temperature ensured a cosy atmosphere - very welcome in the freezing weather conditions. The quality of the food at breakfast was exceptional, the bacon and sausages particularly noteworthy. But sadly no haggis on offer! It was nice to have the hot breakfast served individually and piping-hot to the table. Our outside family commitments did not allow us to sample what looked a decent evening menu. Our room was on the front of the hotel but well above the traffic and this may have contributed to a reduction in the external noise complained about in other reviews. I find it incredible that some reviewers have found significant fault with an excellent hotel. Don't let an unexciting-looking exterior put you off a stay at The King James. If you can locate a special offer, all the better. It's wonderful value.

Room Tip: It would appear that a room on the higher floors (ours was the sixth) is quieter and also offers a b...

We booked this hotel for a special birthday weekend. Good city centre location in a Thistle Hotel, can't go wrong, right?? Eh....wrong!!

Staff firstly are great and the company should be proud of their colleagues enthusiasm. However, the hotel has certainly seen better days.

We had booked via the Thistle reservation main telephone number being quoted over £250.00 room only for 2 nights. Having said this was too expensive, we were suddenly then re-quoted £158.00 for the same deal, i.e. with a choice of either free bottle of wine, complimentary breakfast or a free upgrade. We opted for the free upgrade.....but boy what a let down!!

The decor was a mismash of tercotta, browns and blues in the bedroom but those, combined with the dated, tired, marked, warped and stained furniture really didn't merit a better room than what we'd originally booked.

The TV, which was the only new thing new in our room, did not make any sense at all in terms of channel listings. For example :-

Channel 7 & 26 - BBC1
Channel 9 & 27 - STV
Channel 28 - who knows!!
Channel 11 - Channel 5
Channel 13 - BBC News
Channel 16 - E4
Channel 18 - More 4
Channel 21 - BBC3
Channel 22 - BBC4
Channel 23 - who knows!!
Channel 24 - ITV3
Channel 25 - 5*
Channel 26 - Again, who knows!

It should be pointed out that the TV did not advise you on a guide of any channels - we worked the above out for ourselves before giving up.

Incidentally, Channel 5 had no sound unless you turned the volume up to 100 only to hear programmes at the level of a normal whisper.

The lounge area of the bedroom had a token gesture of a 3 piece suite, which reminded us more of a Doctors waiting room. We're in our mid-forties and in the evening, were quite happy to stay in the hotel and enjoy the facilities that we'd paid for. However, the bar was not inviting so the only other option was to relax in our room......but in tiny little doll house furniture to chill out, resulted in our having to move the TV into the bedroom to enjoy any form of relaxation.

One member of staff advised us that we were in one of the best suites........sadly, this does not come up to our standard of "best suite" but unfortunately for her, her hands were tied in offering anything that was any better than what we'd been given (room 637)!

I remember days gone by when The Boston Bean Company cafe bar, was quite a thriving, busy place to be in, but unfortunately, this really wasn't the case any longer. Tired, dated, quiet (we were the only 2 in for over 1 hour) and all very sad. You can't blame the customers though, as it was very tired and being in the city centre of the Capital, there really are much more inviting, bright, clean and value for money places to be....so we went elsewhere for dinner each night.

We took quite a number of pictures which we've shared including dirty window frame in the cafe bar, very badly marked furniture and general decor in the bedroom as well as disgusting tiling and hygiene in the bathroom.

Thistle, you've let yourselves and Edinburgh down big time, this time. I don't blame the management and staff at all, as I've said, they were first class. However, I appreciate that they only can work with the facilities they've been given, and I'm afraid Thistle, you've let your colleagues down in this case.

One little special mention should go to the Night Porter (older gentleman) who was the cheeriest, friendliest and happy person we could have asked for when delivering to our room at 1am. Clearly he loves his job and it was a delight to have met him.

Will we ever stay in a Thistle Hotel again though....who knows!! You'll need to try hard to convince us!

Room Tip: Don't go to room 637!

After reading reviews nearly cancelled our booking... So pleased we didn't we have had excellent service ,room was great well heated and lovely bathroom with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was cooked fresh All the staff were helpfully and friendly nothing was too much trouble . Selina was fantastic at check in we arrived early so she arranged for our room to be ready within the hour well before check in time. We went for a coffee and she had even had our luggage delivered to the room. Mary was fantastic we decided we would like to stay an extra night and she made sure we could stay in the same room at a good rate Marvellous. Mary ! My thoughts on negative comments are You can't please everybody and If something is not to your satisfaction then complain while you are there then they can put It right If they don't then leave bad Reviews ! Finally Location Location Location Fantastic we will certainly stay at this hotel again

We stayed here for 3 nights centered around Hogmanay this year as we had heard it was close to the street party and was a very nice hotel...well the 'close to the street party' bit was correct at least. The hotel staff was relatively friendly and helpful, but the hotel itself should not be rated as a 4*. We arrived to find a room that looked like it would have suited better 40 years ago and was incredibly out of date. I don't believe we got a full night's sleep the entire time we were there due to the noise. We decided to visit the hotel's restaurant one night around 7pm only to find that we were the only people brave enough to do so. The restaurant itself was elegantly decorated, however it was somewhat paradoxical in that their menu consisted of pizza and burgers that were incredibly overpriced. The bar itself was just the same, and once again we were the only ones there. The only thing this hotel has going for it is it's location.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, see about getting a room that does not face the street.
