“Needs a Visit to B&Q”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2010

My wife and I stayed at the Hilton Grosvenor in early December. We had requested, and were allocated a "Junior Suite" (at an extra £19/night on top of the £129 we'd already paid). The room was spacious but there were some surprising rough edges. For example, the heavily-embossed wallpaper was peeling badly from the ceiling, and there were signs of moisture penetration in one place. Most surprising, though, was the fact that there was a very noticeable gap underneath the room door: I guess about 4cm. This meant that any noise in the corridor could easily be heard in the bedroom, and vice-versa; and as well as contributing to a slight feeling of insecurity it would presumably also be a problem in the event of a fire (though I should stress that the door in question was not labelled as a fire door). And, while I'm grumbling, I can't imagine that the Hilton sells many bottles of unrefrigerated (a suite without a minibar?) mineral water for £3.95 a go.

It's not all bad, though. On the plus side, the hotel occupies a very convenient location and the public areas are bright and attractive. Breakfast was very good, with a chef on hand to prepare cooked dishes freshly.

Great Hotel! Booked through lastminute.com, "Top secret hotels" gave us a very pleasant surprise, Hilton brand name bargain priced at £ 57/night. The mixed reviews in tripadvisor kept me worried until I checked in, the hotel is very nice, great location, (just a 10-15 minute stroll to city center, Edinburgh castle...), the room is big and the beds comfortable.
Would definitely go again!

Thank you for your review, we believe that the success of this hotel is reflected in the fact that our guests come back, time and time again.

I was delighted to read your kind comments regarding your stay; we have indeed received negative comments in the past, the majority of these related to the old club annexe, this was a 3 star product and had traditional decor. The club has recently undergone a £1.3m refurbishment, is now named the Townhouse, and has received it's 4 star rating from VisitScotland, brining it into line with the main hotel.

Thank you for your post.

I stayed at the hotel for one night for a meeting that utilised the hotel's facilities. The room was large and well appointed for an older hotel with a reasonable bathroom and a comfortable big bed. My room was at the rear and very quiet, but the building is on a fairly quiet street so front facing rooms should not be a problem.

Breakfast was good and varied for a vegetarian, service was always quick and pleasant and the meeting rooms were fit for purpose. Dinner was better than average hotel food, I also attended a Burn's Supper at the hotel in January and the event was very enjoyable with decent food.

Location is convenient for buses and Haymarket rail station, there are plenty of bars and restaurants and the walk into the city centre is quick. Only real negative for me was the overpriced internet access. I usually stay with friends in the city so can't compare with other Edinburgh hotels but I had no problems during this stay.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay with us, I am glad your stay was an enjoyable one.

I truly appreciate your kind comments; it seems to me that the quality shines through this hotel, I have much pride in seeing that we still retain many, many customers. I am more than aware that this is difficult to provide 100% perfect service…but that is the challenge that keeps me focussed.

Thank you.

The Edinburgh Grosvenor Hilton is an adequate hotel with a restaurant and bar. The room we had was a little bit bigger than most European Hotels, decor was contemporary, but the room itself a little bit worn. The bed was just ok, a little bit lumpy. Breakfast was a delicious, way above average buffet and was included with our rate. There were a variety of foods - made to order omelettes and eggs, sausages, hash browns, bacon, tomatoes, beans, blood sausage (for the full English breakfast), variety of fruits and yogurts, breads, cereals, and pastries. The staff here were very friendly and efficient. Location was not bad, it was about a 15 minute walk to Edinburgh castle and the city center. The Airlink bus from the Edinburgh airport has a stop (Haymarket) 2 blocks from this hotel and is a convenient and inexpensive way to get to town from the airport. There are several good restaurants and a gastro pub nearby - The Indian Calvery Club and The Mercat Pub being the best. There is no fitness center in this hotel, but for a small fee you can use the one at the Hilton located closer to the city center. We didn't do this while we were there so I can't comment on the workout facilities.

This was my second time staying at this hotel. I first stayed September 2009 and was in small room in main hotel which was fine. This time I stayed in a deluxe room which was £15 more and much much bigger. I stayed over the Halloween weelend on the second floor & had a wonderful stay.

The Lobby/bar area & checkin area is modern & well presented. I flew up from London & Airlink bus stops by Haymarket station which is 1 minute from hotel. Excellent location. Lothian buses day ticket @ £3 will get you from hotel to everywhere you want to go (or you can walk) As I was in deluxe room this time it was much larger & overlooked the street, big bed & tea/coffee making facilites - fridge/ mini bar seems to have been taken away. Plenty of heating in room so never cold. Bathroom was large clean & modern with usual Hilton toiletries.

Rate included breakfast which was fab, efficient Russian lady manning the breakfast room desk so service was very good. Great choice of hot cooked breakfast items, cereals, breads cheeses etc even Haggis & good hot porridge with bottle of Old Grouse whisky so you can warm the porridge even more !!!

Would stay again - had no complaints about hotel stay. I have never ventured over to the Club Annexe so cannot comment on it but main hotel is good. There is a SKY magazine promo code of P19SFO which you can use for stays up to the end of this year which give a 40% discount if you book on the hilton.com/co.uk website and inc breakfast in the rate.

Do try at eat at The Dogs restaurant on Hanover Street & save room after your tour of Holyrood Palace for some fab cakes at the palace cafe, all £3.25 very good, almost home baked.

Booked the Grosvenor Hilton early June for October thinking we had an absolute bargain for £59. Little did we know that we would be sent across the road to the Grosvenor Club which I am surprised the Hilton have put their name to (although not on the outside!!!). The hotel from the outside looked derelict with paint flaking off the signage, and it got no better inside. The rooms were beyond out of date and to find out it was due a refurbishment, which was starting the day after we left, was no surprise! The small print on the website must have been minute and I feel we were totally miss sold our hotel room. SHAME ON YOU Hilton, suffice to say I would NEVER stay at a Hilton again and would advice family and friends to think twice or get a magnifying glass to check the small print!!!

we have stayed in several Hilton hotels and have usually been very satisfied with the standard of accommodation. We booked a city break in the Grosvenor Edinburgh and were given a room in the Club Wing. This is across the road from the main hotel in an old building. First impression not good with tiny lift and creaking floorboards in the corridors. the room was tiny, with a double bed taking up 90% of the space. Bedside light and table on only one side of the bed as no room for 2. the decor was clearly old, with marks on the paper, holes in the paper and actual holes in the wall. On the 3rd floor, the window was small and set high up in the wall, so no view except of sky. The floorboards creaked and moved at every step and the radiator, despite hissing loudly only heated up in the lower half. the bathroom was worse, with a tiny basin, loose taps, a faulty toilet flush and crumbling dirty paintwork. No bath but a shower of sorts. the water temperature and flow were variable, plus a shower curtain on a straight rail which cut right across the base, so every time you moved a cold clammy shower curtain draped itself across you. not pleasant. Have to say breakfast was OK and staff were friendly and helpful. Would never stay there again. Standard more like a one star guest house.
