We arrived by train from Newbury to the Haymarket train station. It was a long train ride, but we got to see the lovely countryside. The hotel is located only a 2 minute walk from the train station. The front desk was friendly and helpful. Our room in the main hotel was spacious, with very high ceilings. The bathroom was upgraded, and they had a flat pane tv. It was quiet. I recommend getting the breakfast which is included for a slightly higher price over the basic room rate. It is their full buffet, which includes omelets made to order. There was even smoked salmon. If you just order that breakfast, it would have cost over 19 pounds apiece. My significant and I walked everywhere. A car would have been difficult, as the hotel doesn't have a garage, and the streets are all torn up with construction. The palace was the farthest, and we walked back in a little over an hour, with stops at the shops and Starbucks.
There is a fudge shop on the Royal mile that has the best fudge I have ever eaten.

Price was first in mind when booking hotel rooms. Thus, when I managed to book a non-refundable rate at £74 for this Hilton, I did not hesistate it. Then, I read reviews here and realise many people hate it rather than like it and was quite scared.

However, I went on with my reservations and had some words to say. Firstly, it is true that there are two sides of this Hilton. If you book the club wing, it is actually a building opposite the hotel. Imagine if it were raining, could be bad. The room at the club wing is not refurbished and thus still maintains the old carpet and the tradtional 'scottish' decor looks a bit scary. It seems like pictures on the wall can 'come alive' at night. So i recommend is probably good in the summer but not winter. Secondly, I request to front desk staff to look at rooms at the main wing, Of course, rooms are nicer, modern and not as spooky as the club wing rooms. However, the bathrooms are still old ones as the staff told me they have only redone the room, not yet the bathroom.

Overall, if you can pay a bit more, go for main wing rooms. If not club wing doesn't hurt as long as you don't stay in the room too much. To top it off, I have to say the staff service was good, especially the front desk. The reception manager (pretty lady) and this spanish receptionist are both very nice. I think they are pretty use to angry customers who found out they have to walk across the street to their rooms. Other than that, we know Hilton differs from properties to properties.

  • Liked — Very near to Waverly Station and easy walking distance to city centre
  • Disliked — room decor a bit eerie

I was booked into this hotel by a company. On arrival they showed me to what would be best described as a child's bedroom, with a single bed pushed against the wall. The tarriff was £160 a night. I was told that all rooms for single occupancy had single beds. After a great deal of complaint, I was shown a larger room, still with a single bed. There was no drinking water in the room. I ordered water from room service which incurred a £3.50 tray charge. The following morning my newspaper didn't arrive. The receptionist told me it had been charged to my room but another guest must have stolen it. The duty manager said, on the contrary, I had placed no order for a paper. And on it went, rude, abrasive service, miserable conditions for business travellers. £3 for 15 minutes use of broadband in the lobby.

We arrived early and the room was not ready which was fine we checked in and left our bags, When we arrived later our room had been changed and we were a little disappointed that having booked a double the room had 2 single beds. We noticed the bed could be put together and after being advised the hotel was full they would send someone up, after some time 2 resturant staff appeared saying they could do nothing as all house keeping staff had gone. Eventually it got sorted but the way it was handled was very poor. On the positive side the breakfast's were great and location not bad. No air con in rooms.

  • Liked — Breakfast was great
  • Disliked — Lack of what was booked and poor customer service from management

The location is OK, not really close to the city center, but within walking distance. The staff were very welcoming and kind, and the food in the restaurant was good. The room was a little strange, though. It wasn't very large, but had a very high ceiling. The bathroom had no source of heat, and the bathroom sink had two faucets (hot and cold), so in order to get warm water, you had to either mix it in your hands or fill up the sink.
