Don't believe all the reviews, I was very worried about staying here after reading the reviews but found them to be unfounded. We stayed in the main building, not the Club wing across the road, which seems to be where most of the negative comments originate from, in one of the contemporary, refurbished standard rooms. Room was lovely and clean, as was the bathroom, with water, 1/2 bottle wine and chocolates in the room. The room was a bit hot, no air-con and the sash window could have done with another latch/hook higher up - had to prop window open using deodorant can, which seems quite standard looking around the other Grade 2 listed Georgian buildings in Edinburgh.

We booked a few months ago and got a room rate of £80 per room per night, inc breakfast and dinner on 1st night, which was an excellent deal and the food did not disappoint. Restaurant was 1st class, head waiter exceptionally friendly and helpful, and at the end of service the chef came out to talk to the diners and get feed back. Full scottish breakfast is not to be missed also - can't beat a bit of haggis with your bacon & eggs - mmmm!

If you get this room rate (which is non refundable/cancellable etc) and stay in the main building then it represents excellent value. I'm sure that the rooms in the club wing aren't that bad and you would struggle to find a better deal even at the Travel lodge or Premier Inn (we priced up premier inn for same weekend and it was £95 per room, no breakfast or dinner).

If you book with the hotel directly and ask to stay in the main building you definitely won't be disappointed.

I found this hotel perfectly acceptable given the price.

I booked directly with the hilton website at a rate of around £85 per night for a midweek stay of 4 nights on a b&b basis. I had a reasonable room, the double bed was a good size for a single occupant but i can imagine it would have been a little on the small side if one were sharing.

My only true negative was that the room did smell a little, which i attributed to being near the restaurant/air con vents on my oh so lovely view of the back of the building, but again, for £85 a night with brekkie, in Edinburgh in Summer, I dont see this as too much of a negative to endure.

Room size was fine, facilities were fine, good size tv, reasonable bathroom etc.

Restaurant meal was very good, bar staff were pleasant, efficient and polite. I had one complaint regarding ringing room service and getting no answer twice, the complaint was dealt with promptly and efficiently by the front desk, a small offer of compensation was given and an immediate call from the GM to my room with an apology within 10 minutes of me returning to my room. This is how complaints should be dealt with and is better than some experiences I've had in far more expensive hotels.

Really, if you expect true 4* for this price, in a capital city, you should revise your expectations. It's not amazing, it did have its faults, but at the price of a travellodge or similar, Id choose here every time.

Spent a weekend at this hotel in their Club section, which seems to be their low-budget part of the hotel as the main part is across the road. I've stayed in better hostels for a third of the price!! The hotel is well past it's hayday, wouldn't rate it a 3*, although some might call it quaint, but definitely not what you would expect from a Hilton Hotel. The picture on the hotel website is very mis-representative, the decor is old and tattered, the bathroom filthy and the shower ok but not great. The only upmarket thing with the entire experience was the Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries! As for customer service, there was one young girl who was really sweet but the night staff and the manager were incredibly rude and indifferent to any problems. Location-wise not ideal, it's a far walk into town, although not too expensive to jump in cabs back and forth.

Would definitely avoid staying here however unless you can specify to stay in the main hotel.

I feel very strongly that I should write a bad review for this hotel and warn other people about staying there. Having traveled many times in the UK and abroad for work I have never had to stay in such a horrible hotel and whole agree with the gentleman who reviewed it before me that it is falsely advertised.

I booked the room online via Expedia and was looking forwards to staying in a nice bright hotel with a modern decor. As other people have said, I was impressed with the friendly staff at the main building until I was unceremoniously sent across (quite a busy) road to what I can best describe as 'Faulty Towers'. The building was disgusting and depressing. The staff was rude and didn't know the local area (the girl on reception couldn't even find the hotel itself on a local area map).

The room was the most horrible room I have ever stayed in with literally a tiny single bed, old wallpaper, no wardrobe to speak of, a small desk dwarfed by an LCD tv which could only receive two channels. There was only enough milk to make one cup of tea. The room and bathroom were not clean; I picked up at least three different people's hair on my feet. There was a disgusting plastic non-slip mat in the bath the kind you might expect to find in a retirement home. The window was almost impossible to open and I am a fit young woman. Someone elderly literally wouldn't have been able to do it.

I ordered room service as traveling alone it is unnerving to go to a restaurant alone. The (actually very nice) girl who delivered my meal joked that it had nearly blown off the tray on the way across the road and I could not believe that this poor girl had had to negotiate the traffic with my meal on what was an incredibly windy day.

I overheard the reception staff complaining about a guest who couldn't find her TV remote control. Then overheard the chef telling another member of staff (not quietly) that he was ill and would be phoning in sick the next day. I declined crossing the road to get breakfast the next day.

I absolutely cannot believe that this hotel is part of the supposedly prestigious Hilton Group. Their feedback card states 'To help us ensure that our outstanding standards of service are maintained...' what a joke!

I have tried making a complaint to Hilton but have heard nothing.

Me and my partner stayed at this hotel in May for my 21st birthday. When we arrived at the hotel we where very imprest, it looked lovely, modern, and very posh. When we went to check in, she told us about breakfast and that we could use the bar, then handed us the door card and said ' Now you are staying over the road'!!! I could not believe it. We booked the 'Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor hotel' not the 'Hilton Club' over the road!

This is false advertising, as it does not say on the booking form, 'you will be staying with us at the Hilton, but you will be staying in a 'club' hotel over the road and will have to travel to and from hotels to have a drink at the bar and to have your breakfast'! If you look on the Hilton website you will see that there is no mention of this 'club' hotel. and deft no pictures.

We feel disused and cheated with this false advertising, and feel that they made us feel unwelcome, took one look at us and thought that we where not 'posh' enough for the hotel, that we had to stay over the road in a dingey, unwell lighted smelly hotel out of the way, also the fact that we had to travel over the road to get our breakfast! I was shocked when we walked into the hotel, the main hotel was very modern, posh and looked lovely, but when we went into the 'Club' hotel we where very shocked, there was poor lighting in all the corridors, squeaking floorboards, we could hardly fit into the lift with our suitcase, if we had our child with us we would not have been able to fit the pushchair in!. Also when we came to use the iron, the ironing board was so thin that it made marks all over my top and the iron sprayed out water which marked my top also as the iron would not stop leaking!.

The other thing was that they told us that our bags would be brought over to the Main Hilton for us to collect, so when we had come to pick the bags up we then found that our bags where not there. Well we had to ask as the lady who was looking for the bags as she sat back down at her desk used the phone then never said anything to us after going off to find them.! We then had to Waite a further 10 minutes for the bag to come from over the road

AVOID AT ALL COST!! OR ATLEAST MAKE SURE THAT YOU WILL BE STAYING IN THE MAIN HOTEL... BECAUSE THERE IS NO MENTION ON THE WEBSITE OR ON OUR BOOKING CONFORMATION ABOUT THIS 'CLUB' HOTEL

  • Liked — Nothing, especially not the traveling over the road for your breakfast in the morning
  • Disliked — everything, smelly, low lighting, creaky floor boards, deft not a 3 start - book a b&b for what you get
