We chose the hotel primarily because of its location, but also because of our experience of the chain in other cities. It is incredibly well located being within a short distance of the castle. The day and night reception staff were friendly and helpful and the one incredibly friendly lady that has the job of greeting guests at their breakfast tables supplying tea and coffee stood out as exceptional and is a real credit to the hotel. The room and bathroom were clean.

Unfortunately, that is where our good experience ends with this establishment. There was a musty smell in our room as well as in the lifts. The in-room drinks equipment we could not use - the sachets of tea were old and smelled as such when we attempted to make them up. On discovering this, we decided instead to have afternoon tea in the hotel restaurant and were disappointed to be served two cakes with cream that had curdled so bad that you could see and smell it and butter in a dish and also sachets that had also turned. That food was inedible which is inexcusable. To balance this description - the sandwiches were edible but presentation was not great (for example deep finger marks on the top, food spilling onto the table) and breakfast was cooked well.

In summary, this hotel needs to up its game significantly. Those parts of the "chain" experience (for example the decor) were perfectly adequate and in line with our experience of this chain in other cities, however the "local" experience (in particular the food we were served outside of breakfast hours) was very poor. We met some outstanding individuals who clearly were motivated to provide a great experience at the hotel, but one got the impression that this did not extend to all staff. The overall sense we were left with was an establishment that was seeking to deliver at the least cost to itself but that, in seeking to do this, sometimes key elements of quality suffered.

Travellers planning a midweek trip should note that Princes Street currently (July 09) has tram works which are directly outside this hotel. We could hear the noise in our room from early in the day to end of the working day. This hasn't influenced this review - the poor mark was earned solely within the hotel's walls - but is mentioned as it may help other travellers.

My other half and I stayed here for a long overdue hotel break. The room was fine, clean and comfortable with great views of the castle, and the bathroom had a good shower. Breakfast in the morning was a buffet and tasted great, and the waitress getting tea and coffee was lovely and chatted away as she was clearing our plates when my other half was in the restroom.

However, one thing really stood out for me. I'm diabetic and stupidly forgot to bring glucose tablets with me, and sure enough I woke during the night hypoglcemic. I called room service to ask for a glass of coke, explainging the situation and asking them to hurry. I'd hardly out the phone down when there was a knock on the door, the night porter had bought me a can of coke from the staff vending machine and wouldnt charge me because of the situation. Service like that is why I'll stay again, but annoyingly, I'm sure that if I made a comment to ramada direct, he'd probably be disciplined!

Stayed here because my favourite budget hotel was full. The room was a good size but shabby, with a nast sour smell in the bathroom. View from the room was great, and the breakfast was excellent with attentive staff. But the room was mediocre at best.

We recently stayed at the Ramada for a weekend break, when we arrived the receptionist advised us that we were being upgraded to a room on the 7th floor as we had picked an expensive package?? Unfortunately the room was on the smoking floor and while we were assured that the room had been aired out the smell of stale smoke was terrible. The room was a reasonable size and had a balcony which looked over Princes Street & the castle which was very nice.
When we went to get into bed we noticed that there were a lot of stains on the duvet cover and sheet which appeared to be dried in blood - we rang reception and after a few visits the bed linen was changed - but it pretty much signified the standard of housekeeping which really needs some extra attention.
Breakfast was good, much the same as you would find in most hotels and the view from the dinig room was beautiful.
The main thing this hotel has going for it is the location it couldn't be more central and close to all attractions, train station, shops etc...

Good hotel for sightseeing in Edinburgh. However, we had a smoking room and it smelled awful, but that our fault, requesting the smoking room. The hotel is centrally located and is walking distance from the train station. If you are lucky you can get a room facing the castle. The bar was nice and although we didnt eat at the restaurant it appeared busy.
Rooms were small, but an ok size for the UK.
