What a shame that this down -at -heel hotel will be so many overseas visitors only experience of Scottish hospitality.
Its ideal position, overlooking The Scott Monument, with views over Princess Street Gardens to the High Street with the Castle on the skyline, must attract thousands of visitors each year.
Inside however, awaits an experience which occasionally achieves mediocrity.
All the public areas and most of the rooms are in urgent need of modernisation and refurbishment. Shabby and worn carpets, an ancient and overworked pair of lifts, combined with faded and jaded wallpaper and woodwork create a dull and dismal atmosphere.
The breakfast buffet is reasonable. It's difficult to present a wide selection simply grilled and fried food badly, and to be fair, the
buffet also includes a good selection of fresh fruit, cereals and porridge. The service is led by a wonderfully excentric and charming waitress who ensures that each of her clients is instructed (every morning) on how to use such exotic items as cafetieres.
The restaurant, in the evening is best avoided. The skills of mass, fast catering which provides an adequate experience at breakfast, is demonstrated again, at prices which are grossly inflated for the canteen - catering standard of food and service provided.
Much, much better is available for this price range in and around Edinburgh.
