I stayed at The Scotsman during my short weekend trip to Edinburgh.
I was upgraded to an Editor's Suite, which was absolutely gorgeous! Big, beautiful room with a nice view of interesting buildings and rooftops out of the enormous windows. Nice, immaculate furniture (no grungy upholstery of old hotels here, no no), excellent amenities (rainfall shower over the bath and a separate showerhead for the bathtub, Cowshed bath products). For Americans, think W Hotels but less pretentious. Just clean, modern, excellently appointed rooms.
Service by reception and concierge were warm, friendly and attentive.
The location of the hotel is as convenient as can be - step outside the hotel entrance on Market Street to find the Waverley train station across the street and the shuttle buses to the airport just around the corner (by the Edinburgh Dungeons). Very close to shopping on Princes Street.
The service during the day in the North Bridge Brasserie was inexplicably surly and reluctant, which was surprising given how friendly and attentive the service was everywhere else in the hotel. It was Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde like in the evening, though, with extremely friendly and attentive staff at dinner. I had drinks there when I arrived (surly and icy cold service), dinner there in the evening as it was raining and I was too lazy to brave the rain (service at dinner was warm and friendly) and then breakfast again the next morning (again, strangely abrupt and grumpy service). The food itself, however, was excellent both times - actually surprisingly good, beyond expectations.
The description does not do it justice, but this is a part of the Leading Hotels of the World group of properties, so it's no wonder the rooms were so well-appointed. Really - I am extremely finicky about hotels, and the Scotsman exceeded my expectations...a wonderful stay!
