“Wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2006

--- knows what Scotsman Hotel the reviewer from Belfast was staying at, because it wasn't this one. Not for nothing is it a member of Leading Small Hotels of the World. We got a last minute, 60% discount deal, so only had the bog-standard room, but it was spacious, appointed in chic, contemporary style and very comfortable from the bath to the bed.

Location is unbeatable, breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Brasserie restaurant was fine and you get what you pay for (if I could recommend any restaurant in Edinburgh it would be Atrium anyway). Service was always with a smile and very helpful. What's not to like?

Second time I've stayed, excellent room with lots of space and all facilities. Worth asking if they have a room with a view available. Everyone very friendly and helpful and a great location close to Princes Street. C an hear station announcements but beds so comfortable it never bothered me.

I stayed at "The Scotsman" for 2 nights in March. We had an Editors room which was lovely. The bathroom was a good size and included their own spa toiletries.

The breakfast was first class. It included juices, cereals, (and porridge), 5 different cooked breakfasts, cold meats and cheeses and endless tea and/or coffee.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. It was in a great location and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.

Pricewise, I think it is a bit on the high side but I have to say you do get what you pay for.

There must be two Scotsman Hotels? - I have travelled for many years around the country and stayed in numerous hotels - from the highest range to the lowest - I can genuinely say this was a terrible experience. If, this hotel was say a 2 star, then possibly this review wouldn't be so harsh, but the Scotsman claims to be a 5 star (and charges 5 star prices!)and as such has to live up to the traveller's expectations.

Firstly - toilet leaked - shower full of hair - TV wouldn't work properly - no air conditioning - very small breakfast - and bad behaviour by staff.
I can only surmise that there are 2 shifts of staff: One that cares and the other (our experience)who were aloof and very unhelpful. I can't understand how some previous reviewers have had a nice experience!

This is never a 5 star hotel. Myself and my friends will never stay in this hotel again.
Bad show Scotsman.

Stayed at The Scotsman for 2 nights recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. We found all of the staff very polite, friendly and professional - was amazed to read some of the previous reviews on this subject.

The building is beautiful and some of the public areas have stained glass windows, marble and wonderful wood carvings and plasterwork.

Our room was very nice. Not huge, but nicely furnished with a fantastic bed, duvet and pillows. Temperature just right. We were on the 9th floor and experienced no noise from street level or from Waverley Station, which we overlooked. Best feature had to be the large free-standing bath in a turret, separated from the bedroom with a curtain. This was fantastic!

Unfortunately we were unable to get a table in Vermilion, the award-winning restaurant. Dinner in the Brasserie was, however, very good.

Overall the hotel is expensive but we thought the standard of accommodation and excellent service made it well worthwhile for a special treat.

Stayed here for 2 nights in February.

Reading previous reviews, we were unsure what to expect, but the staff were very polite, helpful and attentive.

The double deluxe room was roomy and nicely appointed. We were on the 7th floor overlooking Waverley station but no problems with noise as the double glazing is good. The mini bar was adequate and the prices were very reasonable.

The bathroom was a good size and well designed, apart from the shower screen which meant that the wonderful shower made the bathroom floor wet; although the lovely toiletries made up for this.

Room service breakfast was superb, the privacy hatch a great idea.

Had an unforgetable full body massage in the spa, a swim and headed for the Vermilion restaurant. The Vermilion restaurant food was unforgetable and definitely five star first class.

Overall a great break, would definitely recommend this hotel. Really enjoyed our stay and would return.

Stayed here for 1 night in January.

All the staff I encountered were very polite and helpful and having read previous reviews was unsure what to expect.

The double deluxe room was lovely and although it was on the 2nd floor overlooking Waverley station we didn't hear any train announcements as the double glazing is so good.

The room and bathroom was a lovely size and the privacy hatch where room service can be delivered without the person coming into the room is a really good idea. The mini bar was quite basic but the prices were very reasonable.

Ordered room service from the brasserie and it was delicious and wasn't overpriced - didn't go to restaurant or bar so can't comment on that.

Went to the spa for a swim and sauna and wasn't too busy - ask for 2 towels as they are quite small.

Overall really enjoyed my stay and will return - very central for the Royal mile and Princes Street.
