spectacular and spacious rooms, informal and friendly service in hotel, but shower cool and slow, bath tap jammed, excrutiatingly slow lift, bistro overpriced and extremely average with amateur service. Noisy too, and windows wouldn't close fully so waverley station announcements and local drunks far too audible. Location perfect, excellent bedlinen and full of potential but getting tatty in places and at these prices - and we were discounted - its simply not good enough

I rang this hotel to book a room and was quoted a nightly room/only rate.

When I asked to include breakfast they wanted an extra £40 for breakfast (for 2) for 2 nights. So, the rate went up £80.

Now, for us, breakfast is 2 pieces of toast and a cup of tea so £80 feels like a bit of a sting.

When I asked if there was something that they could do about that £80 the member of staff got a bit unfriendly and started to tell me what a great rate I was already getting and making it sound like I should be grateful. I wouldn't say that they were _rude_ as such but they were a long way from pleasant.

The net result: I didn't book it and I won't be going there in the future.

Great location right in the heart of Edinburgh.

Large bedrooms with dvd/cd players and very cool bathrooms. Boutique style hotel , good food, friendly and helpful staff .

Leisure facilities are plentiful and very sylish set up generally, the metal pool is worth a paddle in.

Not cheap but decent value especially if you go for a mid range bedroom.

I've just spent two nights at the Scotsman hotel and I loved it. My room was gorgeous, wood panelled and sumptuous with a wonderful view of the city - made even better by gently falling snow! In addition to the marvellous view there was an in-room safe, complimentary - monogrammed - bathrobe and slippers, a diffuser for the hair drier, fresh milk for tea and coffee and towels the size of small sails. The bed was fantastically comfy with soft down duvet and pillows. The staff were kindness personified and couldn't have done more to make a woman travelling alone feel more cared for.
Criticisms? Very few - the picture on my TV was a weird pink hue, £17.50 for breakfast is a bit steep and I agree with a previous reviewer that life is indeed too short to wait for the lift! Otherwise, an excellent stay in a hotel so atmospheric you can almost smell the ink and hear the printing presses - I kept expecting to see the ghosts of previous editors drifting down the candlelit Sicilian marble stairs!

We stayed the weekend here last weekend and thought it was good, but not excellent. The continental breakfast in bed was £15 each for toast and cereal! Also - it was VERY slow to check in and out. Apart from this it was a pleasant experience, the room was nice, the hotel is very convenient, and the room was quiet despite being in the centre of Edinburgh.
