I booked this hotel from a late deal website as a treat for my husband's 30th birthday and do not regret my choice for a second! We arrived slightly earlier than the appointed check-in time of 2pm and were met on the street by one of the concierges who relieved us of our baggage (1 bag and 1 shirt!) and escorted us to reception. We were dealt with swiftly and in a friendly manner by the staff who were quick to ask if we needed help with reservations for dinner or advice on what to see and do.Another concierge, Scott, showed us to our (huge!) room on the 2nd floor and helped us to settle in. He showed us all of the facilities and helped to fix the TV which was not working. He got us a map to show us where our restaurant for the evening was.We had a lovely lunch in the brasserie (entered by the back door!) which whilst pricey, was absolutely delicious. Service was attentive without being intrusive. We spent a leisurely day around Edinburgh and returned to pamper ourselves before dinner. I enjoyed a long soak in the fabulous bathroom in the previously mentioned bath with taps in the middle. No scalding here as did not rub up against them! Molton Brown toiletries and soft bath towels and robes all helped me to feel relaxed.Had a wonderful sleep in a comfortable bed and the following morning ventured down to the health club via the lift. We were welcomed and shown the facilities. Had a swim and a jacuzzi. I loved the swimming pool although my husband thought it was a little too dimmly lit! The only disappointment in the health club was a ridiculously over-priced breakfast menu (?2.50 for toast)..although when we complained about the quality we were given a 50% discount. All in all a fabulous stay and we will not hesitate to return. We would even take our baby daughter with us as the room was easily big enough to accomodate a cot at one end with us being able to have our own space at the other. Baby sitting services are available as well as other child friendly extras.

I was a bit concerned on our choice of hotel after reading the previous review a few days before we went. However, on arrival, the hotel & staff were second to none! We had booked a great deal online & arrived to find we had been upgraded to a Publisher Suite! The room was wonderful with fantastic views over the city & many luxurious touches. We found 'Escape' with great ease (get into the lift & follow the signs!) & the staff there were so helpful & welcoming. The swimming pool is well worth a visit & if you can manage it early morning, you will probably have the whole place to yourself. A special word has to be be said for the Concierges, who did an amazing job. They even accompanied us the few short steps into the brasserie & found us a seat! Unlike the previous reviewer, we found that we received more attention by coming through the back door, so don't dream of going out onto the street!! Overall we had a truly superb time & am currently checking out another visit!

Chose this hotel partly on reviews from this site which were good. We felt the hotel did not live up to all the hype, and didn't deliver 5 star standards.Disappointments were being sent away when we arrived at 10.15am to return at 3pm when our room would be ready. It wasn't ready when we returned at 3.30pm which is a bit much with an 11am checkout!
Lifts are inadequate and slow when working, and were frequently out of order which is a problem when there are 9 floors! You need to be fit!
Some of the acclaimed high tech equipment in the room did not work. Met a couple in one of the faulty lifts who had changed rooms three times.
The attractive health club is very much a separate business and very difficult to access from within the hotel (no popping down in your robes!).The layout is a real rabbit warren, very confusing and a little unfinished looking in places - and the hotel lacks a centre or heart with a very small afterthought reception behing the brasserie restaurant. The attractive bathroom had a tiny narrow bath with taps in the middle, well positioned to scald, and the bath flooded the floor when its occupant moved! Entrance to the brasserie from the hotel was through the back door - and you needed to walk to the street door to get any attention. No special arrangements or tables were available for residents in the restaurant - and only much persistence and a personal visit mid afternoon on the Saturday produced a table for two that evening. On the plus side, the room, once you got to it, was modern, attractively furnished, and of a fair size, with a comfortable bed. The food and atmosphere in the brasserie was good. The breakfast in the breakfast room (once you found it ) was also good. The staff were pleasant - and gave the impression of trying hard when all was not well. The location is also good.Overall we felt this was a good food and beverage operation and a good health club focussed on the general public - with nice rooms as an afterthought rather than a full service hotel. First impressions of the Balmoral across the road suggested it more closely resembled the 5 star hotel we had expected - however we did not see the rooms!

We have just returned from a weekend break in Edinburgh having stayed at this wonderful hotel. I just can't tell you how much we enjoyed the break thanks to the superb staff. We had an amzing room, which was bigger than expected with a huge bay window. The bathroom was gorgeous with marble, molten brown and even a penguin soap!! We loved the extra touches of the cd/dvd player and the very cool hatch concept so that you can have your room serviced delivered without disturbing you. The spa was lovely and worth a visit just to see that stainless steel pool, although you might have a hard time naigating round the corridors of the hotel finding your way!!! All in all, the hotel is very just gorgoeus. we can't wait to go back.
