me and my boyfriend booked the scotsman based on the reviews on this site... and we were not disappointed.

we booked a deluxe room, for £180 p/n, over the (english) bank hol weekend.. ok, a bit steep, but the upgraded us to a junior suite on arrival!! it was amazing.

staff so polite and friendly.. gym amazing, swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, cowshed products (i spent FAR too much on these!) - amazing room - paper every morning, complimentary large bottle of mineral water every evening with people offering to help you left right and centre.. even coming to your room every evening offering to turn your bed down!!! only minor gripe.. if i had to have one!! would be that they didn't stock up the mini bar every day like they said they would, so we had to keep ringing down to reception to get extra items.. but they were on the ball with all our requests, to 5 mins!!

GO GO GO. you won't regret it.. if you have any complaints then you are clearly used to staying in ultra posh amazing 5*hotels all the time!!!
this place is wonderful. we had room service for dinner one night too wonderful food, and very reasonably priced for room service... and the mini bar is very reasonable too.

email me if you want any more details, will be only too happy to oblige...

p.s...edinburgh is an amazing city too!! and you must go to the witchery restaurant for dinner (if you can get in) - it is on the royal mile, up near the castle on the left hand side.. its the best restuarant i've ever been to... apparantly its booked up months in advance.. we went in on spec and were lucky because someone hadn't shown up!

This hotel was simply amazing. The staff was super friendly and extremely welcoming. Our room was so beautiful. We loved our stay and had a wonderful view of the bridge. Although rates may seem outrageous on the hotel's website, Expedia has really good deals on The Scotsman. Scotland is not really known for its food, but Pizza Express (across the street from the Scotsman) was excellent.

The Scotsman Hotel is one of Edinburgh's landmark buildings in an extremely central location beside North Bridge, between Princes Street and the Royal Mile. The interior is as impressive as the exterior, the bar and staircases are well worth seeing even if you aren't staying there (though I could have lived without the steel staircase in the bar). I was glad to see that the hotel's service lived up to the building.

The building has been sensitively converted into a surprisingly small hotel. The rooms are tastefully decorated with nice touches of detail (tweed headrests, an unobtrusive hatch for room service to be placed in, a Belfast sink in the bathroom and newspaper print on the breakfast crockery to remind you of the buidling's former life). The service at the Scotsman was as good as anywhere I have stayed and attention to detail was very good. Staff were extremely helpful and very friendly, particularly the doorman and concierge service.

Parking is available at a nearby underground car park where hotel guests receive a discount. I was charged £23 for my two night stay, not unreasonable.

The bill was more than I'd paid for accomodation on previous trips to Edinburgh but the quality was evident. I certainly wouldn't say they are overpriced, though I imagine their rates in August are substantially higher.

I'd recommend it for a romantic weekend.

  • Liked — Service and decor.
  • Disliked — Charging for internet access seems petty given the room price.

We spent 4 nights at The Scotsman. Check in was efficient and we received a warm welcome by Gregory who took the time to show us around the room. He was courteous and helpful and always greeted us when we passed by. The deluxe room was very big with high ceilings and large windows. There was clever use of space with the wood panelling in the room. The flat screen TV, nicely stocked mini bar and pull out tray with tea and coffee were behind one of the panels. There wasn't much wardrobe space though and we had to remove the ironing board to make space. The bathroom was very large with lovely tiles and lighting. The showerhead was like being in a waterfall and the bathtub was nice, although it was a bit too narrow. Cowshed products were available, but no body lotion... only shampoo, conditioner, body wash and bubble bath. The mattress was a good size. However, it needs to be replaced as it sags noticeably on one side, which can make for an uncomfortable sleep. Our room was located on the 4th floor, which is in fact, street level if you are using the hotel's main entrance of North Bridge. Waverley station is just below and while it isn't too noisy, the incessant recorded announcements can be a bit grating and keep light sleepers up at night (bring earplugs). There can also be street noise late at night so if we stay there again, we will ask for a quieter room on the higher floors. We had dinner at the North Bridge Brasserie and the meal was excellent, with friendly and efficient service by our server Linda. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss. While the surroundings are nice and the food is good, service can vary so it's best to arrive early to avoid the rush. On our last day, our server forgot our tea, coffee and toast. By the time we got the server's attention, we didn't have time to order a cooked breakfast as we had to check out and catch our flight. Room service was good and delivery through the room's privacy hatch was quite convenient. The location is ideal, just a few minutes' walk to the Royal Mile or Princes Street. The experience of staying at such a beautiful, historic hotel was second to none. We would definitely stay there again and try the stainless steel swimming pool and spa this time!

  • Liked — The large room with high ceilings and great view!
  • Disliked — Outside noise, server forgot our breakfast order

The Scotsman is a great place. The rooms was very individual featuring fancy tweed curtains and cushions. It had all the features everything you'd expect of a five star hotel and a privacy hatch for delivery of meals etc. so one doesn't have to open the door. The Health Club is very nice (it has Scotland's first stainless steele pool), although it is a bit awkward to get there. I would highly recommend this place.

  • Liked — Individuality of the place
  • Disliked — The ceiling of the pool area (it had some rusty bits), but that's really a minor point...
