We have just stayed for two nights at the Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh. The Scotsman is in a great location, on North Bridge, right next to Waverley Station (Edinburgh's main train station). The Airlink airport bus goes to/from Waverley Brige too, so it's really easy to get to on public transport. The best thing about the Scotsman Hotel is the escape spa and health club. Unfortunately we didn't manage to get any treatments in the Cowshed spa (all booked up), but we did use the leisure facilities - gym, swimming pool, saunas, steam room, jacuzzi etc. All of these were excellent.
The staff were generally courteous and polite, with the concierge staff usually greeting us on our way in/out of the hotel. We arrived quite early (noon), so our room wasn't ready. The check-in staff took a contact phone number so they could call us when the room was ready. We waited until 3pm (one hour after the guaranteed check-in time); no phone call.
Guessing that the room must be ready by then, we returned to the hotel and were kept waiting for about 15 minutes. Seemingly there was a problem with the computer system, so they couldn't tell if the room had been cleaned or not. The lobby is very small, so it could not really accommodate the number of people waiting to check in - there is only enough space for 6 people to sit down, and there were at least 15 people waiting for their room keys. As there were so many people waiting and trying to get to their rooms, we gave up waiting for the lift and took the stairs to the sixth floor.
Our room was a 'study room' - the Scotsman's smallest room size. Given that the low season weekend rate for this room starts at £200 per night (£270 on weekdays), the room didn't really live up to its billing. The room facilities were good enough: TV, tea/coffee making facilities, trouser press, internet access etc. The Edinburgh monopoly game table was a nice touch. The bathroom was small, but had everything you need. The Cowshed toiletries are very nice, though you generally don't expect 5* hotels to have refillable containers screwed to the walls! The room decor is quite twee - a cross between tartan/tweed and a more modern look. Some of the furnishings are getting to be a bit worn , and in a double room it would be nice to have two comfy chairs! Really, it seems that the 'study room' is more designed for one person, rather than two. Perhaps the hotel should advertise this...
The other main problem was the temperature in the room. Despite having the temperature knob set to it's coldest setting, the room was invariably too hot and stuffy - and it wasn't possible to open the windows. The bed was comfortable enough, and we both slept reasonably well, in spite of the noise from the street and the bar/club next door. The housekeeping service was average - the tea/coffee were not always restocked, and there was only ever one glass set out with the complimentary mineral water on the turn-down service. Also, our room key stopped working on our second night; we had to wait quite a while in reception for the night staff to reset the key, as they didn't seem terribly clear about how to do this. On check-out day (check-out time is 12noon) we received a phone call from reception at 11:25am, asking how much longer we would be in the room. None of these small moans about the service amout to terrible crimes, it's just that in combination they were all a bit irksome and added up to a less-than-spectacular overall level of service.
Overall, the Scotsman is a good hotel, but I don't think it is quite good enough to warrant either the 5* rating or the price!
