Stayed here one night in December , thankfully got a good late deal for DBB. The rack rate would be a total rip off. As a regular traveller in five star hotels in Scotland we found the Scotsman did not meet all our five star expectations. The room was very comfortable , we did get an upgrade to a superior room. The bed was divine and extremely comfortable. The conceriage staff were friendly and helpful and the receptionist on Check in was OK. . However I felt that apart from the Conceirge's none of the staff looked very cheerful. The reception area lets the hotel down as it seems like it is a temporary location a bit dark and depressing. There is no fine dining restaurant and food is served in the Brasseire which is lovely , ....noisy and vibrant if you are looking for this type of atmosphere. It has a downstair area and upstairs around the balcony is where they seem to sit hotel guests, it is great if you are not on a romantic, intimate weekend! The food was superb and the waitresses were very good. There is no cosy bar area and my husband and I left the hotel for a short walk to another favourite five star hotel f(The Balmoral) For a late drink. The staff here were so friendly and welcoming the difference was very noticeable. Breakfast is also served in the Brasserie, the staff at breakfast were not very cheerful or welcoming . When my husband commented about the croissants being hard and not appearing fresh , the gentleman suggested in a not a very nice tone, they were fresh but were probably a little over done!
Check out time is 11am , when I politely requested an hours grace ie noon , the receptionist said she would call me back. Another lady called me back and said NO , somone was coming in later that day for our room and we had to be out by 11AM , not very good Customer Service I thought. Summary a nice comfortable room- staff not up to five star Customer Service - in great need of training.
