Our once a year get-away from the 'little one' took us here as the website photos and golf course seemed ideal.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and it was convenient that we could leave our clubs in the concierge's room (good job everyone's honest, as it was walk in yourself and grab what you wanted.) Most of the rooms, though, were in the new complex and frankly you could have been anywhere. Room size with a king bed was just about OK, but the bathroom door was on a spring, as was everyone elses, causing you to wake up to what sounded like gunfire every morning. The bathroom had an inadequate fan meaning a free sauna for a shower over 10 minutes long.
Our first dining experience was in the Long Weekend Bar for a couple of drinks at 4pm with a bowl of chips and some bread - that'll be £12.60 please! The menu there was very limited with no main dish under £10. The pub over the road offered twice the variety at half the cost - if you can spare the fifteen minute walk.
Breakfast, though, was very good with a good spread to accomodate all tastes (why no porridge?).
The golf course seemed fantastic. There were three chipping greens at varying distances up to 100 yards,a golf range (bit out of date) and an imposing starters hut next to the East Course PGA rated 1st hole , par 5 up a gentle hill. Having negotiated that, nearly very hole was a bog standard 400yard+ par 4, dead straight, finish the hole and do it again the other way, etc, etc. Even the 10th hole was an exact replica of the first and placed right alongside. Only towards the end (14th + 18th) did you have to think about what to hit off the tee (i.e. not a driver, hit it as far as you can shot). Cost of the round for two? £120. Maybe money better spent elsewhere as even the view was unimpressive and once again, you could have been anywhere. Go to another course if you have the transport.
Talking of which, getting into Edinburgh was easy enough by bus from the gate (and far cheaper than a taxi). They run every half an hour or so, but what the staff didn't tell us was to take exact change (couple of Americans with us benefited from a cheap fare then). Top tip. When you alight in Princes Street, go over the road and check the bus times back as around 5pm they are infrequent.
