4/12 found this review helpful

I have just returned from my 4th stay in the Apex City within the last 12 months and in just that short time I can see it's standards sliding dramatically.

I reserved and paid for an Executive King room which should have had a Castle View, Bathrobes and a safe. I got a tiny pathetic view of the side of the castle if I pressed my face against the window, NO safe and NO bathrobes. Basically I paid an extra £20 a night for NOTHING! How hard is to read a reservation?

The room was NOT clean:

1. There was dust on the lightbox above the bed which I could smell when the light was turned on for any length of time. I shouldn't have to dust my own room for crying out loud.

2. The DVD player, kettle, tea tray and hairdryer all needed a VERY good clean. They were filthy.

3. One of my supposidly clean coffee cups was stuck to the saucer with old coffee when I tried to pick it up.

4. The plugs and carpet edges were filthy with dust. My room wasn't vacuumed once in 4 days.

5. Not ONCE was my linen changed during my 4 night stay.

6. Getting the complimentary bottles of water left in your room was hit and miss. I drank both of mine all four days but only got them replaced twice.

The supposed air conditioning is nothing more than a decorative box on the wall because it obviously doesn't work. The windows only opened 1 inch and I'm not kidding. It wasn't particularly warm in Edinburgh during my stay but my room was so uncomfortable with dead heat I found myself dreading going back to the hotel.

The smell of vomit in the lift all day Saturday and Sunday was revolting and obviously wasn't noticed by anyone who matters.

Check-out was fairly pleasant althought I would have appreciated a simple "goodbye" rather than be handed my receipt and given a rather vacant look.

I didn't eat at the hotel so I can't comment on that.

INTERNET ACCES!!!!! £15 for 24 hours???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!

I can think of a dozen other hotels in Edinburgh that are cheaper to stay in and aren't letting their standards slip as rapidly as the Apex. If you're considering staying here please do your research and don't say you haven't been warned. I won't be back to Edinburgh until December and don't see any reason why I would stay there again unless I hear things have improved radically.

We booked a last minute room at the hotel during the Edinburgh Tattoo. I was a little worried that we would be allocated the last room in the house. However the staff were fantastic and honoured my e mail request for a larger room with a view of the castle! The room was vey modern, spacious and spotless. The bed was HUGE! The bathroom was great with a walk in shower, bath and rubber duck! The smellies in the bathroom were lovely and the room service menu offered to sell larger bottles to take home.
Fiona the receptionist was very helpful and pointed out the nicer places for dinner.
We had come to see the Tattoo on the Saturday. However, to our delight on the Friday we could hear the music and watch the projections on the castle ramparts from our window. It was like having our own private show!
Great hotel with great service.
A lovely weekend. We will definately go back and recommend this hotel to friends and family.

My husband and I stayed at the Apex for 3 nights during the end of July, first of August. First the positives-very clean and nice decor. Nice 'free' extras in the room-bottle water, teas, coffees, newspaper every morning at the door, big TV, spacious room. The breakfast is nice, good service. The front desk staff are very friendly. GREAT location to the Castle, Royal Mile, St. Giles and Waverley Station. Lots of pubs across the street as well. The front desk staff told us about a staircase across the street from the hotel which takes you directly to the Castle entrance. Ok-the downsides. We booked this hotel through a travel agent who told us the hotel had AC. WRONG. It was rather warm while we were in Scotland and after spending all day walking & touring, the room was very hot not having an AC. The window barely opened as well, allowing no breeze to come in which was a shame b/c the wind blew strongly while we were there. We asked for a fan and we ended up getting 2. Secondly, the front desk can't convert money for you-this was a first for us and we have traveled a lot in Europe. Third, the rooms do not have in-room safes. However, Edinburgh is a beautiful city-a must to travel to!! The people are nice and the city is clean and full of history. The scenery is amazing-get out and walk the Royal Mile and hike up to Calton Hill. Breathtaking views! Be sure to tour Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Also, be sure to do the "Mary King's Close" tour, which is on the Royal Mile. Very interesting! If the Apex City would spend some $$ and get AC-I would give them 5 stars & stay there again if we ever go back to Edinburgh.

My Wife And I stayed here for five nights. The Staff were very friendly and helpful. We arrived well ahead of check in time. This was not a problem as our bags were put away for us.Our room was ready when we checked back at one o'clock. The room was comfortable, clean, and tidy.We Booked through needahotel, and got a good deal that included an excellent breakfast each day.We would certainly stay here again...Just two little complaints..Air Conditioning would be a major boost to the overall comfort..the shower worked well and was clean..but they looked a little bit ..tired. The hotel Is central and in a busy area with lots of bars etc but our room was towards the back and not noisy.

First impressions; most of the staff we encountered on entry were kind of surly considering the star rating, the only two who were very friendly were on reception. The receptionist's opening line was "no, you didn't reserve any rooms... we have nothing left... ha ha ha". Not so hilarious after a 9 hour drive. The freebies were okay, but there is no extractor in the internal bathroom, no signposted fire exits, the windows don't open apart from a crack and worst of all - NO AIR CONDITIONING! During the worst heatwave for years, this was no laughing matter. I rang reception to ask if they could do anything, they said they'd send a fan but it never materialised. The shower was a little weak but reasonable. The bar doesn't take plastic payment after 10.30pm and there is no cashpoint in the hotel. The mattresses were broken - badly. You can't open the net curtains, so the view of the castle was a little wasted. Cleaning staff burst in early in the morning with a 'sorry, we thought this room was empty'.

On the plus side, the noise from the endless stag and hen nights wasn't too bad here, there was a view of the castle, the hotel is fairly central. Also, there is some car parking and overflow car parking a short distance away at a neighbouring hotel. There were pubs and shops close by and the decor was quite nice apart from the strip of carpet on the bed. The hallways are clean and nice and the rooms smelt fresh.

I wouldn't pay full price for this.
