Be careful when you choose this hotel as it's in Grassmarket, which is a hike and a good walk from Edinburgh station! Things started off badly when we were told we were too early to check in at 14:20 - check-in was from 14:30. The receptionist informed us that she had to wait for confirmation from housekeeping before she could allow us to check-in. We waited for this "confirmation", but it never happened. We eventually got to our room after asking again some half an hour later, but reception had suddenly no recollection of our earlier attempt to check-in! We were then shocked to find we had been allocated a disabled room. Without going on too much, service and welcome was pretty poor and insincere for a 4 star hotel.
The rooms are small and we were surprised to see hairs on the bathroom floor, along with dirty glasses in the cupboards. Not good.
Despite a bad start we managed to relax in the room and had a good night's sleep! Room service was good and recommended.
Despite being small, the rooms are quite modern and the tea is good quality! All in all it was OK, but not 4 star and I would not overly recommend this hotel.

Management response from Lindsay Sturrock, General Manager
(Management representative)
Jul 21, 2009
Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to review the Apex City hotel following your recent stay with us. I was disappointed to read that you were delayed at check in and then, when you received your room, the glasses had not been changed. I do hope you will accept my sincere apologies and I will ensure that my Reception Manager and Head Housekeeper make the necessary improvements to our service.

Whilst I am generally proud of our Tripadvisor status and our good feedback regarding friendly staff and customer care I do accept that we can occasionally get it wrong and I do hope that you will still consider staying with us again in the future.

Kind regards

Lindsay Sturrock
General Manager

A niceish hotel in a fabulous location, as long as you remember it is in the grassmarket! The public areas are all well maintained and in good condition and the staff were nice and helpful. The 4th floor room was quite big and well lit by huge windows - this is where the hotel belies it's 1960's office block origins which means that there's no air conditioning and the windows only open a little bit. Another interesting thing was that there was no minibar or safe in the room.

After 2 times Apex City hotel, London, I decided to take Apex again in Edinburgh ( they have 4 hotels there, crazy ) and I was very pleased by the service of the staff. The hotel itself is very modern en located in very the hart of the city historical centre next to another Apex hotel. Rooms are very large ( so is the bathroom ) en very good equipped, you have a Wide-screen TV, DVD-player and a lot of digital channels, and you are allowed to use the swimming pool of the other apex hotel ( just a few feet away ), and have free wireless internet access .

We had a nice room on the 4th floor, with views of the castle.

Nicely decorated, and enough room for all our things.

Our superior room has bottled water, pringles, and jelly beans (!), which were replaced each day too. (Free Wifi too).

The bathroom was too dark, but had a separate shower, and bath which was nice.

There is no air conditioning in rooms, so we had the windows open. This worked fine, but despite being down the side of the hotel, there was still noise from outside, as the hotel is opposite several restaurants, and pubs. This only really became a problem on Saturday night.

I wouldn't reccommend letting the hotel post anything. It took over a week for postcards to arrive via reception, but only 2 days from a post box !

My girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel for three nights in mid-June 2009. Upon arrival, the staff was courteous and polite, checking us in promptly and giving us an excellent packet of information on the local tourist attractions. The room we had was a decent size, and was very clean, with a view of the castle. The bathroom was big, with a large bath and separate shower. A pool and fitness room were available for use in their sister hotel, Apex International, two doors down. The best part of this hotel is the location. A two minute walk is all it takes to get to the Royal Mile and the castle and another ten minute walk to Holyroodhouse.
Some minor problems were encountered however. The free WiFi was often slow and sometimes didn't work (although this may just be a problem with the location of the room we had). The business center that was provided on the second floor used outdated computers (Windows 2000 with IE6) and had a non-functioning printer.
Overall this hotel was excellent and is quite affordable if booked ahead online.
