We checked into the Apex, based partly on reviews here, and found it to be a friendly, nicely appointed small hotel. The Grassmarket location is perfect for walking Edinburgh. We had good choices of pub food and drink across the street, and were a reasonable taxi ride from Waverly for the next leg of our trip.

Even during Festival, our room was quiet and comfortable. We would definitely return to the Apex.

This hotel has a fantastic location in the middle of Old Town Edinburgh. It's within walking distance of everywhere in city centre. The quality of the room wasn't as good as I expected, more like a 3 star hotel in America, but if you don't intend on spending a whole lot of time in your room then there shouldn't be a problem. The Aqua bar was nice too with a large selection of alcohol and is open late.

My husband and I stayed here for one night of our belated honeymoon trip to Scotland.

We arrived quite early to check in (around 11 a.m.) but the very accomodating staff had no problem checking us in. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a nice bed, a shower with excellent water pressure and a stunning view of Edinburgh Castle at night.

We didn't eat at the hotel at all, so I can't comment on that.

There were 2 computers available for guest use; that was very nice.

The hotel is on Grassmarket, just one block from the Royal Mile, with many bars and restaurants in close proximity.

This is a great location - a few minutes from the castle and Princes St etc within easy walking distance.

We expected some noise as Grassmarket is full of bars and restaurants, but the drunken binge crowd were in full swing on both Friday and Saturday night and it got incredibly noisy.

Edinburgh is generally expensive, so £140 was about the going rate for a 4*, and was good value with breakfast included for two. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, moreso than any hotel I've stayed in for a while.

Drawbacks include the size of the rooms; they're small and big cases mean you'll be stepping over them constantly. Make sure also that the aircon is working, as otherwise you might need to open a window and the noise will keep you awake guaranteed.

My husband and I recently spent a week at the Apex City Hotel - having just spent a weekend at the Apex in London, we were expecting the same excellent service - we were sadly disappointed. Apparently the hotel is some sort of bank building conversion and the building is showing it's age - some of the room doors are pretty beat up and the hallways are a bit dreary.
Upon arrival we discovered that our room safe did not work - the front dest told us to check it when we returned to our room that evening and if it didn't work, they'd send someone up tomorrow - no sense of urgency. The following morning we advised the front desk that the safe was still not working - they promised to send someone up to check on it. Upon returning that afternoon before going up to our room I asked if the safe had been fixed - front desk advised that while someone was up to look at the safe, they were not sure if it had been fixed and that I should go up and check and if it didn't work, they'd send someone up tomorrow - Tomorrow! Again, no sense of urgency - they kept trying to push things off to tomorrow.

Safe was finally working. A couple of days later we returned to our room late after having taken a day trip out of the city - we were tired and decided to order room service. The first couple of times we called room service, our calls went to voicemail. Finally the front desk took our order and could only tell us the food would be up as soon as possible. When I pressed her and pointed out that they guaranteed a 20-30min wait - she assured me they're meet that deadline. Over an hour later - I had to call down again and tell them to cancel our meal. Manager tried to offer us a free meal but it was now close to midnight and we were very tired. And all of this happened on our wedding anniversary!

The bathroom wasn't cleaned very well - I spotted the same hairs in the shower day after day. The room provides bottled water and a few small snacks but they are never replenished after the 1st night. We had to request water daily and it was never provided as requested.

Minor issues on thier own but when grouped together it was a real pain. One should expect much better service when paying these prices! Would not recommend.

Pro - The location is great. Apex International down the block looked nicer.
