Spent a night in this hotel - standard twin room. Very spacious room which was very clean although was quite strange that it had no minibar. A flyer in the room claimed that internet was free but never used it. A couple of PCs were available for free at the lobby. Location is excellent for bars, restaurants and sightseeing. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

A conference organising committee booked this hotel for me for four nights this July. I arrived after a long flight to find helpful staff, a suprisingly large (standard) room, some extra bonuses (jelly beans, pringles in room, along with a bar fridge with complimentary cold drinks), and a comfortable and modern bathroom.

After unpacking and having a rest on an almost hard, but still comfortable bed, I turned on my laptop, only to find that it would not connect wirlessly (to the free wireless internet access promised on the hotel's website). After several calls to the tech support people, it was discovered that my room (near the back of the hotel) was not in an area where the signal was strong enough. The staff offered a room change (to a room which was also too far from the router to pick up the signal) and were extremely apologetic, but it was quite frustrating to be disconnected.

There were two computers for guests to use on the 2nd floor, but this isn't the same as being able to work on your own desk in your own room. On day 3, I discovered that my laptop could pick up the signal only if it was on the floor of the closet. This was hilarious, but not practical.

The breakfasts were of a very high quality and, though they were included in my room rate, I would have paid for them - a mixture of cold buffet and hot items from the menu.

The staff were very accommodating throughout my stay, although never offered any compensation for the lack of internet access in my room. All in all, a good hotel, but be sure you don't require the connection.

  • Liked — Great breakfasts and large room
  • Disliked — Weak, almost inaccessible wireless internet signal

We have stayed in the Apex City for the last 4 years during the festival. Its a great hotel in a wonderful location. Its only about 10 minutes walk to most venues so perfectly located on the grassmarket. There are lots of shops and restaurants close buy and the royal mile is just minutes away and you can see the castle above you from the front of the hotel.

The rooms are very comfortable. They are light and airy with climate control features (a rarity in Edinburgh), flat screen TV, DVD, Tea/coffee making and free internet. The bed is very comfortable with a choice of pillows. The bathrooms are simple with good toiletries and plenty of towels.

The doors are locked for security in the small hours but there are signs on the door directing you to a side door where you will be let in by the night receptionist upon showing your room key.

I would highly recommend this hotel and will be back next year for the 5th time!!

We stayed at the Apex for 4 nights at the end of July 08. The trip was part of our honeymoon and the hotel upgraded our room to a larger suite. The room was spotless, spacious and the bed enormous! Great bathroom with a walk-in shower too.

My husband has lived in Edinburgh previously and so knows the area well. Grassmarket, the road the hotel is on, is wonderful. In the old town, the pubs opposite the hotel and in the surrounding area are steeped in history! The hotel restaurant is wonderful, we ate there the first night of our stay, but there are also plenty of excellent places to eat on Grassmarket and in the surrounding streets. We can recommend the Beehive Inn opposite the hotel for a reasonably priced and delicious meal.

The location of the hotel is just WONDERFUL! We had the most beautiful view of the castle from our hotel room (see attached photos) and shared a really romantic last evening together watching the rehearsal for the Royal Tattoo and listening to the pipers. Awesome.

Grassmarket is a 5/10 minute walk from the castle and about a 15 minute walk to Princes Street where there is the most amazing array of shops and, again, a beautiful view.

The only complaint we had about our stay at the Apex City was the temperature of our room. We hadn't realised that the hotel wasn't air conditioned and, as we were staying on the 4th floor, our room was very warm. We contacted reception about this though and they supplied us with a fan which was great and solved our only problem! I don't think that Edinburgh is used to the hot and muggy weather we had during our stay :)

Overall, we had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Apex City and will definitely be returning to the hotel and to Edinburgh. If I could afford it, we'd be buying property up there :)

Highly recommended!

  • Liked — The great location, the great room and the great city!
  • Disliked — The hot room, but problem solved when fan arrived :)

Stayed here on a group tour. Excellent location near Edinburgh Castle. Very friendly front desk staff. Rooms were sleek and modern. Huge separate walk in shower and tub. Beds were very comfortable, and windows opened to let in the cool evening air. Toiletries were large sized spa products which smelled heavenly. After several days of drying my hair in other hotels with no mirror in which to look, I appreciated the thoughtfulness of a hair dryer stationed beneath a large mirror!
