“Christmas weekend with the girls”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

Stayed here 1st of December for one night for a shopping trip with the girls. Good size room with a view of the castle. Comfy bed, large TV, but have to say the shower was a major let down, more of a sprinkle than a shower. Great location in the grassmarket made for a lovely stroll to and from Princess street and gardens, however there was some noise from outside on Saturday night. We had our evening meal in the restaurant which was average, but breakfast the next morning more than made up for it. All the staff at the hotel were great, polite happy and more than willing to help. Overall a great stay at a great price.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a castle view

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you found the hotel to be great value and appreciate you taking the time to appraise the hotel. I'm sorry your shower water pressure was disappointing and would appreciate it if you could possibly drop me an e-mail informing me of your room number so that I can arrange for my Maintenance Manager to have it repaired. My e-mail address is lindsay.sturrock@apexhotels.co.uk

I've stayed here twice on business. The hotel is located in the Grassmarket in Edinburgh and so very centrally located. From the outside the hotel does not look promising at all - but don't be deceived at inside it's modern and tastefully decorated. The room was very reasonably priced but is very clean, comfortable and modern, and reasonably spacious. Decent sized bathroom with walk in shower and a bath, and excellent elemis toiletries. There's also free wifi.

I'd say the quality is several levels about equivalently priced Holiday Inn properties or others in this range. The rooms at the front are probably likely to be a bit noiser - particularly during the summer, as they face out on to a busy street, but there are rooms at the back facing in to the car park which will be quieter.

The Agua bar in the hotel is also excellent, well stocked and stylishly decorated.

I'm not sure you could really ask for more from a central Edinburgh hotel in this price range to be honest.

Note that there are two Apex hotels on the Grassmarket - the Apex International is next door. It's a larger property but I think the City is probably the better of the two .

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front probably noisy.

Edinburgh's Apex City Hotel offers good rooms and a pleasant environment. Location is great (if you don't mind the steep roads to and from Grassmarket. The room was clean and well furnished, and the complimentary biscuits were much better than the norm!

Only downside was the lateness of the housekeeping - returned after a day of sightseeing at about 4pm, and the room hadn't been cleaned - but an hour later it was all done.

Overall, thoroughly recommended.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and are happy to recommend us to others.

My apologies that your room was not serviced until quite late. Our room attendants try to service departures first so that we can offer rooms to new guests as early as possible. This does mean that occasionally, on very busy days, that guests staying over may have their room serviced a little later. The next time you stay with us please let reception know if you would prefer to have your room serviced by a particular time and we will ensure your request is carried out.

Thank you again for your feedback and I hope you will find the opportunity to stay again soon.

Kind regards

We stayed in a superior room for one night at the start of December.
We arrived to a warm welcome and speedy check in. The room was lovely with a view of the castle and had everything we needed for our stay. The location is excellent, right in the centre of the city but there were no issues with noise on an evening.
Check out was equally efficient and the hotel offer a left luggage facility which was a great help the next day.
We would definately recommend this hotel and stop here again.

Stayed here 2 nights on a business trip. The hotel is just behind Edinburgh Castle and it is only a short walk to the Royal Mile. Princess St is only 0.5 miles away albeit an up and down route. There is limited parking but we managed to get a space and it is only £10/ day.

The bedroom I stayed in was extremely quiet - looks like most of the rooms overlook the sides of the building rather than the front so most should be OK. The room was very spacious with a separate sitting area and the bathroom had a separate shower and bath. It was extremely well equipped for this class of hotel - 48 inch TV, DVD player, good range of electrics and a safe and minibar (didn't use it so I can't say how pricey it was). My only complaint was the tiny size of the wash basin which made shaving difficult and filling the kettle impossible (a colleague suggested using the bath tap - why didn't I think of that?!).

The breakfasts were superb. Everything was freshly cooked to order and there was a very good choice from full Scottish to eggs benedict or haddock with poached eggs.

The staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgable. I would definitely use the hotel again either for business or a weekend break.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to review the Apex City hotel. It was pleasing to read that you enjoyed your stay and "would definitely use the hotel again".

With regard to the kettle being too large for the wash basin I must admit that you are quite correct. I can however confirm that we have started replacing some kettles each month for a smaller size as other guests had made the same comment. Hopefully by your next visit we will have changed all the kettles and you should find making your tea a little easier.
Thank you again for your kind feedback.

Just had an excellent weekend in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. What made this break so enjoyable was our hotel, The Apex City. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, good location in the old town, short walk to the castle. Lovely staff, very helpful and the excellent breakfast sets you up for the day. Had an evening meal which again was excellent. Hope to return in the near future.

Booked a couple of nights here in November to take my wife to Edinburgh for a short break. When booking (online) I asked for a view of the castle if possible and, on arrival, found out that they had given us this which was a great start. Now with the view comes facing onto the Grassmarket which can potentially get a bit noisy but it wasnt bad at all when we were here and we didnt notice any noise. The room was nice and clean and had a good bathroom, good storage, coffee and tea making facilities and a nice big TV. We had a problem with the TV on the second night and after a quick call to reception, they sent someone up to sort it out within minutes. Staff were very friendly and efficient and the hotel is in an excellent location for trips to Edinburgh as a tourist, with the Castle, Royal Mile, National Museum of Scotland, Greyfriars Bobby etc. all just minutes walk away. Will try and stay here again next time we visit Edinburgh.

Room Tip: When booking, we asked for a castle view - and we got one :)
