I stayed here for one night this week and was truly shocked that such a basic hotel could charge £79 per night excl breakfast. It was more like a hostel, lots of teenagers hanging about, the whole place smelt of cigarette smoke and there was a terrible smell (school dinners?!) in the corridor my room was on on the 4th floor. The room was large but VERY basic. There were lots of 'false' doorways although one door into the next guest room did open!! There was a side table and sofa pushed against it but it did not feel safe (someone determined to push through could have easily done so). The window was too high to reach easily and I would not have felt safe having it open so the room was too warm. The bathroom was also basic. The staff tried to find me a hairdryer but couldn't find one, which I was very annoyed about. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE.

The hotel is clean and functional, the staff were friendly and helpful but I just couldn't shake the feeling that the place was more like a hostel that had been given a fresh lick of paint.

My room was reasonably sized, but basic. The TV had some choice but the reception was quite fuzzy.

The breakfast choices were very limited, but tasted fine.

The main positive point of the hotel is its location - it's just off the Royal Mile, only a couple of minutes walk from the castle.

For those on a budget, you'll have a pleasant stay - although I'm pleased that I stayed on a quite night as the walls sounded very thin.

Stayed at the Ibis this past weekend. For a two star hotel it was perfectly fine, the room was a good size, it had a large bed, flat screen TV (reception a little fuzzy, but not a big deal), despite the bathroom looking a little dated (shower screen, base, tiles) it had a fantastic power shower. You only got 2 towels and no toiletries (we bring our own anyway) but for a one night stay it wasn't a big deal.

We didn't sample the breakfast so I cannot comment on that. The location itself is great being just off the royal mile and Waverley train station just over a 5 minute walk away. Unfortunately though (not the hotel's fault), groups of wannabe goth kids hang around the Hunter Square. They were noisy during the day but at night we slept without any noise interuption.

Check in and check out were fine as well. No problems with the staff.

Can recommend for a short break without any problems.

Stayed one night at the Ibis. The room was large and clean and had a sitting area. The hotel is located just off the Royal Mile and is very convenient to shops and restaurants. The breakfast costs extra and is a continental style but had a wide variety to choose from. I would consider staying there again.

This hotel is ideally located and an excellent choice for those travelling on a budget. The night was 69 pounds (excluding breakfast) and I booked over the hotel webpage. Unfortunatelly there is no option for double or twin room. So when we arrived, I asked for a twin room, but there was non available. When we asked for a duvet, we were offered a ugly brown blanket in the first place, but then the friendly receptionist gave us a proper duvet. So I would recommend to call the hotel in advance to make sure they book a twin room for you if you need one.
In general, the hotel is like any other Ibis - modern, clean, comfortabe, but basic (only one towel per person). The room was clean, but there was a bit of mould between the tiles in the bathroom.
If you arrive by bus at Waverly Station, walk up Waverly Bridge, cross market street and then walk up Cockburn street. When you arrive at the High Street (= Royal Mile) you will see Tron Kirk (church) on the opposite side of the road. The hotel is located on the right hand side of the square behind the church.
If you like to go on a ghost or underground tour, it starts very close to the Hotel. Auld Reekie Tours start at Tron Kirk and Mercant Tours have the office at the same street as the hotel (they start their tours at St. Giles cathedral, also very close). So you don't have to walk far if you do an evening tour.
There are loads of restaurants and pubs around the hotel, and the castle is only a few minutes away.
