The hotel is right in the heart of Edinburgh, walking distance from anywhere worth walking to. Our room was of good size, clean, well equipped, nothing at all to complain about except maybe bathroom door hinges that made horrible screeching sounds. Good self-service continental breakfast with a nice choice of cold food (full hot breakfast not available). Very nice and helpful staff (Eastern European for those who care).
If you get a room with a view of Hunter Square, you get free entertaiment into the bargain: watching people getting drunk, falling from the steps, hurting themselves, being taken away by the ambulance, police questioning witnesses etc. Strangely, by night it was rather quiet, we never had any problems sleeping, might just have been lucky.
There's a nice pub, Advocate, and a very good fish restaurant, Creelers, literally next door. The nearest paid parking is good 10 minutes of walk away (the hotel offers a discount), so it's not very convenient if you plan using a car a lot, but on the other hand you don't seem to really need a car if you're staying mostly within Edinburgh.
