We booked the Dunstane for our wedding dinner, and while the food was good, we were disappointed by the poor service. You would think that since it was our wedding dinner we would have received better service, but that was not the case. Our drinks were never refilled, and despite being told that we could order from the regular menu, the staff choose without our consent what our guests were to eat. We will say that the food was good, but could not recommend this place for future travelers. Also, it is most definetely not a 15 minute walk to Princes Street, more like 30 minutes and the bar & street is noisy.

Management Response

This small wedding was booked through a wedding co-ordinator and she was told this was going to be a busy day as Scotland Rugby team play the all blacks at Murrayfield and also she was given the list of menus to choose from and came back to us with the set Dinner menu choice at a lower price than our standard a la carte menu. We just followed her instructions. So hence I am dissapointed in this review as this was no fault of our own as she made the decision. The hotel is a 15 minute walk to the beginning of Princess Street, maybe we are a 30 minute walk from India Buildings (The Registrar Office)

“Fantastic Stay!”

Dunstane House

My fiancé took me away for a weekend as a birthday treat and I was lucky enough to be taken to The Dunstane House Hotel. On arrival we were greeted by a pleasant member of staff who showed us to our room, a 4 poster bed room. It was gorgeous! Very tastefully decorated and clean with a lovely en-suite bathroom.
The hotel was ideally situated for going into the city centre, regular buses and only a 10 minute walk, so plenty of sightseeing was done!
We had a wonderful dinner in the Skerries restaurant on our first night there as we are both fans of seafood, although there were a wide variety of dishes on the menu we were both tempted by the Salmon! Also their Orkney fudge cheesecake is a must!
All in all we had a fantastic stay there, staff were very helpful, friendly and attentive, and the room was one of the best. Also if we lived closer I would love to have dinner there more often! I will definately visit again in the future and recommend this hotel to my friends!

We visited Edinburgh for a short break with our daughter and her friend. We took advantage of Dunstane's off peak offer - stay 3 nights including a Sunday and pay for 2 - which made the price appropriate. One of the reasons we selected Dunstane House was for wireless internet access to keep in contact with our business. This appeared not to be working - although we have used our laptop before in other locations [not at our home] and since - with no problems. Although reported, to reception, problem remained unsolved. Breakfast - no marmalade available for all 3 days and other preserves cheap brand blister portions. Breakfast sausage - disappointing quality - I would guess less expensive commercial. On the positive my wife enjoyed the kippers. Failed light bulb in our room remained unchanged. Some pleasant helpful staff and others very sullen. Would we stay again - probably not? We do not like the larger chain hotels, but believed that our choice of a 4 star small Scottish Hotel would have delivered a better experience. Will try another next time. More attention to detail needed.

“Disappointed”

We stayed at the Dunstane house last month, having read the mixed reviews.

When we were shown our room by the receptionist the first thing she said was "you will find this room gets very hot". Whilst it was the lovely weather when we were there, the room got no air at all (desite the window being fully open) and it was unbearably hot! A fan would have been appreciated.
The room itself was nice and clean but I would not say 4 star. We paid £100 a night which I thought was too much.
The breakfast was just average, on the second day the waitress misunderstood our order and brought us totally the wrong thing. However this was soon rectified.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the location pretty good. We walked everywhere but it is a 15 minute walk to Princes Street and not 5 as the hotel suggests.

“Very Disappointing”

Dunstane House

Whilst we didn't stay at the hotel we did eat in the Skerries Restaurant which forms part of it. On the positive side the staff were friendly and showed us to the bar for a pre-meal drink on arrival. The emphasis is on seafood from Orkney but the menu also contains a wide range of meat dishes none of which we sampled. Was slightly irritated by the fact that although our booking was for 8 we didn't get shown to the restaurant until 8:45. It wasn't as if they were particularly busy as only 3 other tables were filled despite it being a Saturday night. Their timing didn't improve as we were then served 3 courses in quick succession in the space of about an hour. From a personal point of view I found the food very disappointing as I'd previously heard some good things about the place - my main course of halibut was very bland and overcooked. My starter although fine in principal (salmon and crab timbale) was sitting in a pool of butter and was far too rich. My boyfriend's Orkney Longboat (mixed fish cooked in a greaseproof paper boat - salmon/cod/scallops and mussels) was also overcooked to the extent that the fish was woolly in texture and the scallops rubbery. With main courses around the £17 mark there's absolutely no excuse for badly cooked fish. The bill came with a 10% discount voucher which we won't be using.
