This hotel is quite expensive, and from the photos published in the Scottish tourist guide as well as the 4 stars assigned to it, we assumed that it would be a decent place to stay. Sorry to say, we were extremely disappointed with our choice.
We had taken 2 rooms for 3 nights; one was a twin room on the top floor, and was actually quite nicely decorated. The second was a double room on the ground floor, and the only word I can think of to describe it is ghastly. That we were charged 85 pounds a night for it is absolutely criminal. The decor was shabby, the double bed was lumpy, the room itself was tiny, and the carpet was absolutely filthy. I wouldn't even rate it a 1 star room.
The twin room, although nicely decorated (it had been redone within the last year), was quite dirty as well, for example, thick grey dust along the top of the curtains (which were at waist height due to the angles of the attic room, and which made the dirt easy to see), dusty and dirty drawers, including a golf tee a previous guest must have forgotten, and carpets that don't see a steam cleaner too often.
The service, with the exception of two of the front desk staff(in particular a girl originally from Vancouver), was indifferent, and in some cases downright unprofessional.
The breakfast was adequate, but not exceptional. We also ate in the bar one evening, and again, the food was soso, but not worth the price, and the service was not very good at all.
The tea tray in the room was not replenished at all during our 3 days there, which is something that was always done at any of the other places we stayed at. So, rather than drinking regular coffee each day, I was drinking decaf by day 3. Not a big issue, but an annoyance from a supposedly 4 star establishment.
The hotel was advertised as being a ten minute walk from the centre of town; unless they are referring to the centre of Haymarket, rather than Princes Street and the Royal Mile, this is certainly not true. It is a good 10 minute bus ride down to Princes Street, or a 35 - 40 minute walk.
Despite our dismal experience with this hotel (and an inordinate amount of rain!), we did have a fantastic time in Edinburgh. The city is so beautiful, and interesting, and there are so many things to see and do. Definitely go and visit Edinburgh, just don't waste your money staying at this hotel!
