“Hotel of calm, near the action”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2006

stayed here last spring on a last minute deal with laterooms.

Hotel is in a great location, very quiet but only 5 mins walk from the Royal Mile.

Rooms werent huge but comfortable with well appointed en suite.

comfortable beds with air con for the summer.

quiet hotel with helpful staff

Never ate there but lots of places nearby for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The pool is ok, bit small and in the basement, but clean. Could do with some updating tho.

This was my first visit to Edinburgh. I was very impressed with the hotel. My room was lovely, it was bright and well-furnished with a comfortable bed, bathrobe, tea & coffee-making facilities. A nice touch was that there was a speaker in the ceiling of the bathroom that allows you to listen to the television/radio while getting ready to go out/having a bath etc.

Breakfast was good, with lots of choice and the option of ordering dishes such as porridge, kippers or smoked haddock. Staff were friendly and the hotel was quiet. The location is good - it is about a 10-minute walk from the city centre. However, I think this is an advantage, as Edinburgh does attract a lot of stag/hen parties and I imagine that the city centre gets quite noisy in the evenings.

My only negative comments are as follows:

1. The concierge was foreign and didn't really know much about the area. He even gave me rather dodgy directions for my walk to the city centre;

2. I asked for a wake-up call for the Saturday morning. It did not come through then, but came through on the Sunday morning instead, when I had not ordered one!; and

3. My spa appointment was cancelled at the last minute because the therapist had called in sick. Probably unavoidable on the hotel's part, but still unfortunate.

These are all minor matters, however. I would be happy to recommend the hotel to my family and friends.

This was my third visit to Edinburgh and the best hotel i have stayed in for a while. We had a Club room on the 6th floor which was very nice with all the mod cons you would expect from a top class hotel. The swimming pool was very nice especially if theres only a handful of people in there. Also by the pool is a sauna and steamroom. The treatments are of very good price too. As others have commented the hotel is about 5-10 minutes walk from Princess St. However the number 36 bus picks up and drops off right outside the hotel. All staff i spoke to were very friendly and i will definatly be back.

Good hotel in a quiet location within a short walk (about 5 minutes) from the royal mile. Stayed there for a weekend break with my family (children 9 and 12 years). The children enjoyed the swimming pool. Great breakfast although dining room was busy at times. Just across the road from Dynamic earth which everyone enjoyed. Also try the deep sea world at queensbury (about 30 minute drive away). Family rooms were fine although ask for a corner suite facing Dynamic earth centre. The only criticism is having to pay an extra £15 fee per night for parking.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2006

Stayed for 3 nights midweek, as 2nd leg of a 3 city journey in early April 2006. This is a great 4 star hotel, just a block south of the Royal Mile, and really close to Holyrood Palace, Dynamic Earth, and Arthur's seat. It's modern and new, but the decor is elegant & traditional. The concierge service is excellent; they greet you when you arrive, and attend to your requests as best they can. I got a great deal from Otel that was tax and breakfast inclusive, about $130/night midweek, double occupancy (breakfast otherwise costs 14.95 pounds per person). The double room and bathroom is spacious (though it might not seem so when you first walk in the room) and very clean, and the bed and bedding warm and comfortable.

It's the perks that I wasn't expecting that made staying here so pleasant: breakfast includes continental buffet AND ordering from a list of both english and scotish breakfast items, complimentary overnight shoe shine service, tea making self-service in the room, complimentary bottles of still and carbonated spring water each day, towel warming rack in the bathroom (don't touch it directly or you'll burn yourself), heated bathroom mirror, daily paper, speaker in the bathroom so you can hear what's playing on the TV. There is a gorgeous pool in the hotel, and I really wished I brought my bathing suit, because it looked quite enticing.

The only thing I was disappointed with was the TV viewing selection. I was expecting a multitude of offerings from the satellite TV and only got a handful of news and sports channels, and just a bit of radio. But maybe Scotish TV is just that unexciting.

That isn't going to dissuade me from staying here again. I totally recommend it. My travel partner who stayed at the 5-star Caledonian Hilton on her last visit to Edinburgh was thoroughly happy with this hotel, and said that other than the warmed bathroom floors and more oppulent restaurant and lobby at the Caledonian, the MacDonald Holyrood was just as good.

PS. Here's a breakfast tip: when ordering "Wheat" toast, it's probably better to say "Brown" toast, as the words "Wheat" and "White" can get confused (I think they might sound similar in the Scotish broque).

We arrived prior to check-in time and they let us check-in right away because they had a room ready, which was great.

Staff all very friendly and welcoming.

Room nice, but nothing special given the high standard room rates. We got a good deal for staying here, but wouldnt pay the standard rates. £15 for 24hrs parking at the hotel also seems very steep.

Good choice on the dinner menu and food excellent. Breakfast too was very good - cooked, cereals, fruit, pastries etc.

Best thing about the hotel is its location. It is situated next to the Scottish Parliament building and Holyrood Palace. Nice area to walk around. It is at the bottom of the Royal Mile, around a 15min walk to Princes Street. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby on the Royal Mile. Superb location for a short break.

Stayed here for a 3 night midweek break and found the rooms and surroundings clean and well kept. Breakfast was lovely, fresh fruit, good quality cooked breakfast/kippers/fruit juice. We had the leisure facilities in the afternoon virtually to ourselves and the hotel is situated in good position at bottom end of royal mile and right next to Pizza Express!
Breakfast service good on 2 mornings and then on 3rd, busier morning, all quite chaotic, having to ask for everything, as clearly understaffed. Beds were remade in evening on first day, then nothing on next 2 nights. I mentioned this to staff on leaving and they said it should have been done adn will mention to housekeeping! We got a good deal on Otel(--)!!
