We've been visiting Edinburgh hotels for many years and found the Holyrood MacDonald as good as the best for helpful staff, comfortable accommodation, excellent dining, and good central location. I cynically expected that being so handy for expense account politicians and officials would result in snooty staff and overpriced accommodation -- I couldn't have been more wrong!
The hotel is situated a hundred yards from the controversial new parliament building and Holyrood Palace, adjacent to the the Queens Park. All of the Old Town sites are within walking distance from this end of the Royal Mile, with the castle the furthest at the other end. The new town and most university sites are a short taxi ride away.
We had an excellent dinner in a comfortable dining room with an international atmosphere. Breakfasts were the full scottish menu, though I looked in vain for a bowl of porage for starters. An early morning run through the park to the Salisbury Crags is a good way to prepare.
The room had all the stuff we needed though a few more BBC channels on the TV would have been good. I'm getting really picky now, but they are free. The bathroom and shower all worked fine and everything was clean and well maintained. Our window looked out over the dynamic earth science museum to the park beyond.
The staff were friendly but polite, and could feature in a training film for the rest of the industry to learn from.
If you are driving, include parking charges in your budget, Edinburgh Council doesn't really like cars, and although there are car parks and some on street parking nearby, like all of Edinburgh it's expensive, and probably better to let the hotel porter do it for you at £15 per 24hrs or £5 during the day.
