The hotel was at the wrong end of Old Town for us meaning we had 15min walk to restaurants and pubs that we liked but that made us appreciate the pint more! We were really impressed by the size of the room, it was bright and spacious, including seating area as well as large comfortable bed, well soundproofed walls and good heavy blackout curtains. We had an evening meal in the restaurant and although it was void of atmosphere the food was delicious. Concierge staff are very knowledgeable of the area and were able to recommend some excellent events ('Taste of Scotland' evening at the Prestonfield Hotel, 4 course meal/wine + 2hrs scottish entertainment including dancers/bagpipes/accordian/scottish tenors - £49pp)
We availed of hotel leisure facilities too, all toiletries provided including cosy towelling robes and slippers in our room to wear to the pool. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay feeling well rested and pampered by the time we came home.

  • Liked — spacious but warm cosy room
  • Disliked — distance from other pubs/resaurants

I stayed for two nights at the Holyrood Hotel. The hotel itself is very nice, it has an impressive lobby area, pleasant bar and modern dining area. All of which you would expect from a hotel in this class.

The bedroom was of a high standard with a nice comfortable bed, armchairs and coffee table.

The bathroom was clean, tidy and modern with good quality complimentary bath goodies.

The location of the hotel is ok, it is at the end of the Royal Mile. Personally, I prefer to be in the Princes Street area or on the Royal Mile more towards the Castle.

Staff were professional and overall it was what I was expecting from a hotel in this class.

Breakfast was taken in my room and it was fantastic - arrived spot on time and was extremely generous.

My only complaint with the hotel is the car parking situation. I appreciate the parking problems in Edinburgh, but the hotel does not have its own car park, so you are left with two options - either have your car valet parked at a premium cost, or park your own car in the nearby NCP. We opted for the NCP option - what a pain, dragging heavy bags up to the car park, back braking!

Overall, a nice hotel and I would have no problem recommending it to other travellers.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at the MacDonald Holyrood in March 08. I picked the hotel for its location at the end of the Royal Mile.

The hotel was of a good standard - lovely breakfast in the morning which could fill you up til lunch! They had a choice of everything from fruit to pastries to cooked breakfast. We did not have dinner in the hotel, but the menu looked lovely, and reasonably priced too.

The room was large and comfortable. A nice bed - very cosy! The health club and pool in the hotel were well maintained and modern. We were the only ones in the pool when we went for a swim!

The hotel is in a good location at the bottom of the Royal Mile. There are some lovely walks to be had around the hotel - weather permitting! It's quite a walk into the new town and quite a hill up to the castle, so it might not be suitable for someone with walking difficulties. However, we enjoyed getting out in the fresh air and its a good way to see Edinburgh.

The only thing that I could criticise about the hotel was that the cost of parking was v.expensive and not included in the overnight rate - it was an additional £60 in total, for a weekends' stay - so if you are taking your car, have a look round for a cheaper option!

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

  • Liked — The good location and breakfasts!
  • Disliked — The price of the car parking

Went here for a one night hen package. It was £115 for the DBB or £140 incl a spa treatment. Had a great time and all staff could not of been more helpful and polite. We had our meal in the library on the 6th floor and it was our own private room so we could create our own atmosphere and the meal was scrummy. Later we sat down stairs having a good singsong, a bit of meatloaf, at the bar until 5.30...Would recommend it for good location an great hotel. Hen night package well worth it... McDonalds hotels holding their high standards.

Ps fab new leisure complex at the Forest hills McDonald hotel and a romantic setting

Had a weekend in Edinburgh and wanted a central location to the old Town. This hotel is well placed to visit The Palace of Hollyrood and The Parliament. It's also convenient in fine weather to walk The Royal Mile and get to The Castle.
Staff were very helpful. The place was clean and the breakfast is excellent. The room and bathroom decent size, no view. The gym and pool are good but no jacquzi. It isn't cheap but we did get a weekend deal which made it better value.
