“Excellent location. Good 4* accom, but why no SKY TV?!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2013

Lovely hotel - great location for stroll to castle/Princes street shopping.
Must admit I was worried by trip advisor comments, and even tried to cancel my booking, but really pleased I didn't.

Hotel fantastic. Yes, no doubt it will benefit from updating rooms, but lobby and restaurant are great.
All staff lovely & friendly. Frank the concierge was great.
We booked a massage at the Spa & Lyn was amazing,
All told, a great location

One small gripe - no sky TV, so after an afternoon shopping & whilst waiting for Mrs C to get ready for dinner, I had channels 1 to 5 and price-drop TV to choose from
It may sound like a small thing, but was disappointing

They said, top rate service, and definitely a hotel is return to.

just got back from our two night stay at this hotel, this being our third stay ,we stayed on the 6th floor so worth the upgrade ,the staff have got to be the friendliest and most helpful staff i have ever come across from the young james in the bar area to the housekeepers everyone seems so happy at their work. the restaurant had just reopened and the food and service was spot on really good menu and not to expensive we had afternoon tea as well which at £9 per head was great value the scones with lemon curd deserve a special mention. the only thing that the macdonald is missing in my view is a jacuzzi pool but thats just me being gready! we will return as usual at the same time next year for our wee early christmas gift to ourselfs and would not stay anywhere else and this comes from four really fussy women ! thanks to the macdonald staff for an excellent time

Room Tip: 6th floor new upgraded rooms

Stayed for 2 nights for sightseeing and xmas shows. The hotel was lovely, the newly refurbished restaurant and bar were very smart and our room was large, comfortable and very clean. Foodwise we only had breakfast but that was excellent, the buffet was laid out weel and looked enticing and you could have any combination of cooked breakfast items all served well and nice and hot. But the main thing that prompted me to write a review was the staff, they were so welcoming and friendly on arrival and throughout our stay, giving helpful directions and information and showing interest in our activities. Nothing was too much trouble and as I said in the title a great welcome to Edinburgh.

Dear Zoe S,

Many thanks for taking the time to offer a glowing review of the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel.

I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and that you like our new Rocca Bar & Restaurant as much as we do. The next time you will have to come back for dinner, the food is exceptionally good and fantastic value for money.

We pride ourselves in our customer service that we offer, it’s very rewarding to the team that you have touched upon this. I will share it with them as they will be encouraged by it.

We very much look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel, maybe for some summer time festival shows this time!

Was immediately made to feel welcome. Frank was the most helpful concierge. rooms were comfortable and everything was available and replenished daily. The only disappointment was the breakfast it was slow service waiting for tea coffee and toast and my fried egg I'd asked for didn't turn up before we'd finished. But would stay again as the friendliness made the stay worthwhile.

Dear JillF,

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel.

It was lovely to hear that you enjoyed your overall stay and the Frank looked after you, I will pass this onto him as I know he will be very encouraged by it.

I am sorry you experienced a slow service at breakfast. We have recently re-opened our new restaurant for breakfast, to which we encountered a few training challenges. The Restaurant manager along with myself have since addressed these areas to ensure we are delivering the fine service we are renown for .

Thank you once again for your comments, such feedback is a valuable way for us to monitor our operation and make improvements where necessary. We look forward to welcoming you back to hotel again soon and if there is anything I can do to help enhance your next stay, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Yours Sincerely
Pamela McAllister

Just stayed here on a shopping trip. We arrived on an early train and were surprised that our room was available straight away. Room on bottom floor was clean and comfortable. We were on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal and the food was lovely. Restaurant was doing a trial run before opening fully after refurbishment and staff were very attentive. Just a couple of things to suggest we were confused when presented with a bill for food and wine when we only needed to pay for wine. Staff said it was the system but this should be remedied to resolve this for customers. Breakfast was lovely but staff were rushing around too much trying to serve hot drinks and items such as toast which resulted in them forgetting orders. A simple solution would be to put tea pots on tables and to have toasters for customers to help themselves.

Enjoyed three nights at this well located hotel. The Holyrood has the potential to be a Macdonald flagship, but needs to 'iron out' a few minor flaws. Positives: lovely staff, spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, lovely staff- especially Matthew Thompson in the spa who went out of his way to organise treatments for myself and friends. The treatments were excellent and added significantly to the relaxing feel of our weekend break. Maria on the reception desk was also very helpful and managed to sort out efficiently a minor problem with room allocation on arrival. Negatives: organisation at breakfast a little shambolic and the quality of some of the produce not particularly good. The hotel needs to look at who is supplying bacon etc. Not everyone likes scrambled eggs and the wait for eggs cooked to order was far too long. The refurbishment is good but people like a tasty, relaxing breakfast experience. Overall, this is a very good hotel and I would definitely return if visiting Edinburgh especially if the minor blips are addressed. Proximity to Arthur's Seat and Parliament gives visitors a chance to experience a part if Edinburgh often missed.

Dear Maxs,

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of the hotel. I am so pleased you both enjoyed your stay with us and your boyfriend had a great birthday.

Its great you found our location handy as we are very central and in walking distance to the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood park. The team here will be touched by your kind comments, we strive to deliver a personalised customer service, I will certainly feedback this back at our weekly operations meeting.

As you have touched upon we have the making to be the Macdonald flagship for Scotland, but we of course need to continually train and develop the team here to be the best as we launch the Rocca Bar & Restaurant.

Thank you once again for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back very soon!

Kindest regards
Pamela McAllister

We stayed here for two nights for my boyfriends birthday and it was a lovely experience. We were one of the first to try out the brand new restaurant in the hotel which looks beautiful and the food is also brilliant, we were served by the restaurant manager and supervisor both nights who were extremely friendly and helpful. The location is also great, near the Scottish parliament and not at all a far walk from princess street and the royal mile.
Would definitely recommend.
