This is the letter I sent to the hotel manager. They NEVER acknowledged it! TO BE AVOIDED AT YOUR 'HIGH' COST!!!

Dear Hotel Manager,

With reference to the above stay in your hotel, unfortunately I feel I have to write a formal letter of complaint. My expectations for the hotel based on its history, location & price per person were quite high so I was horrified with the accommodation, food & service during our stay. I actually booked two rooms for two couples for two nights with breakfast at a cost of £536.00 and I have to say I have stayed in 1 and 2 star hotels for less than half the cost, which were far superior in every aspect. Please find below a list of concerns arising from our stay;

1. The room was tiny and cramped to the point where the furniture didn’t really fit properly.
2. The room overlooked a side street with bins/skips with workmen shouting out frequently during the day.
3. The room was very hot and stuffy and the only window that could be opened for ventilation was in a poor state of repair.
4. I burnt my wrist on the towel rail which is still blistered and sore and noticed at the time there were no warning signs in the ensuite to warn of potential risk of burning.
5. The paper I ordered for the Sunday morning was never delivered.
6. The Full Scottish Breakfast was awful. The scrambled eggs were congealed and like that of powdered egg served in a hospital, the bacon was not cooked properly. On the Sunday I waited and waited and then had to ask someone for coffee and toast after eating the meal!

As you can see I am really disappointed that a supposedly special and very rare weekend away with my wife has been soured by our experience at your hotel.

Under the circumstances, I am more than happy to call all of the major internet companies that deal with you and give them this factual information so others don’t have to put up with it. Edinburgh is a lovely city marred by what is perceived to be a quality hotel.

During my stay at The Old Waverley I was bitten by bedbugs, there was such an infestation, you could see them in the corners underneath the valance. It was a disgusting and uncomfortable experience and ruined my weekend in Edinburgh.

The hotel manager was totally unsympathetic and implied that I might have brought them with me!?

After a lengthy negotiation and me being brought to tears in the dining area, he then promised me all sorts of compensation which I have never received.

There is obviously an ongoing problem with bedbugs at this hotel so I would definitely not recommend staying here.

The Old Waverley was an old fashioned hotel that could do with a refurbishment. It was in a fantastic location with easy access to all of Edinburgh. Our room was a basic double which was clean and ideal for just a weekend visit.
The hotel has no parking but offers a discount at the near by NCP. Beware you have to park in a selected zone to receive the discount which we were not told and ended up paying full fare which was quite expensive!
The staff were quite friendly and we didn't have any major issues with our stay at this hotel.

This hotel is in a fantastic central location with some brilliant views of Princes Gardens and the Castle. However, if this sounds tempting, make sure you know what type of room you're getting.
We booked through Air Miles, and there was no indication on either their website or the hotel's that we were being allocated an internal room. We ended up in a small dingy double with an opaque window that opened out on to a service shaft containing air conditioning units. We were told that no other rooms were available, and I gathered from the reception staff that we weren't actually in the worst one!
When we complained to Air Miles on our return, the response from the hotel and booking agent (Octopus Travel) was that the room was a standard double and considered spacious! The bathroom was lovely, though, and breakfast was plentiful, if a little unexciting.

Me and my sister stayed at the Old Waverley last weekend and we were extremely satisfied. Can't help wondering why all the bad feedback - guess it all comes down to your attitude!

We stayed at room #115, "one of our best rooms" as they said at reception, with a limited view to Princes St and Eburgh Castle. Sure enough, a 1st floor room tends to be noisy, especially with all the dozen or so festivals going on... but I mean, it's an old building located at the very centre, what do you expect? On the other hand, we had a magnificent view on all the Tattoo fireworks :-) Location was absolutely superb; after a long day of holiday-making it was lovely to have our "homebase" within only a few steps from the Waverley Bridge!

The room was wonderful, well functioning, clean and spacious. Bathroom ventilation never worked and the beds were not the most comfortable, but otherwise we liked it a lot. Breakfast was expensive compared to city prices, but it was very good - they even served haggis!

The staff was friendly enough, but their attitude did seem somewhat rigid. I could easily imagine any complaint situations becoming a bit complicated. We didn't experience any though :-)

But what's with the heavy scent of perfume? Me wonders... Our "explanation" was that it was meant to cover the smell of ghosts & death - such an old building simply has to be haunted, considering we're in Edinburgh ;-)

My overall experience was very satisfying and I would definitely stay at the Old Waverley again.
