I wouldn't have booked the Old Waverley if I'd read the reviews beforehand but as I already had a reservation and it was too late to cancel I approached the hotel with serious concerns. I needn't have worried, some of the reviews must be of a different hotel or written by staff from competing hotels wanting to queer the Old Waverley's pitch. Don't get me wrong, everything isn't perfect but it is far from being untenable. I booked a standard double room for two nights. Don't expect a Scottish welcome as almost all the staff are eastern European migrants but they speak excellent English, are prompt, courteous and friendly- it's not their fault that British people will no longer work for the wages and hours the hotel trade offers. Check-in time is 3pm and we were early but our bags were locked away while we went away to come back later. When we checked out our bags were locked away all day until we returned to collect them with a ticket later. The Lush shop does smell but it didn't penetrate strongly far into the hotel in my opinion. Our room was on the 5th floor looking out over Princes Street. It was very clean with no sign of bed-bugs and fleas- that has to be a bad joke - but small (no larger than a Guest House en-suite bedroom) with inadequate furniture. Three small drawers in a dressing table, one of which is largely taken up by the hairdryer and its anti-theft device, and a clothes rack with eight hangers, attached to the wall is not sufficient in a double room. Had we been staying for more than a couple of nights this would have been a problem. It was also too hot, although there was no sign of a heater turned on, and the sash window only opened about 6 inches, presumably to stop idiots falling out, so it was impossible to cool it much. The road is busy so some people may have difficulty sleeping with the window open, leading to the room getting hotter during the night. The weather wasn't particularly hot during our stay, had it been this would have been a serious issue. The room was neatly decorated but nothing special but the bathroom was very nice, although hot water on first running took a long time to come through each day. The room was cleaned and replenished each day and fresh towels provided. Breakfast was plentiful with a good selection of good quality items and items not pre-prepared could be requested. Items of food used up were soon replaced, with the restaurant manager being busy and keeping a check on things. We didn't dine in the evenings, the menu was uninspiring and put us off- also, it appeared that only a sample menu was produced, which didn't change, so how one was supposed to decide whether or not to dine there on this basis is unclear. Do you take pot-luck?
Would I stay there again? To be honest, probably not. The hotel is 3-star, i.e. good / average / adequate, don't expect any more, the rating is accurate. It is very well positioned for the railway station. The heat problem in the rooms could really ruin your stay, unless you like to be hot in your room or you are staying in winter. There isn't a great deal seriously wrong with the Old Waverley, it's just that there isn't a great deal particularly good about it and in a city well blessed with quality hotels, centrally positioned, you can easily do better if you shop around. If you can get a particularly good deal it might be worth considering for a night or two but I would stay at one of the better establishments next time, even if I have to pay a little more. Apart from the central location you could get the same a lot cheaper in one of Edinburgh's guest houses.
