I didnt know what to expect. But the room was SO cozy and constantly clean, the staff was SOO helpful with anything i needed and the location is GREAT. Close to everything including good shopping!!! Plus the view is gorgeous. You almost never had to leave the room.

The Old Waverley was very satisfactory for our needs. We took the Airlink bus in from the Edinburgh Airport (only 3.5 pounds) and it dropped us off at Waverley station which is literally 1 minute walk from the Old Waverely Hotel. The Hotel is also no more than a 15 minute walk (or a little less) from Edinburgh Castle. It's one block from Balmoral Hotel which has a famous afternoon tea. The room itself was small but suited my daughter and I just fine. The bathroom is newly remodeled and very nice. I will say the walls are a little thin (our neighbors got in very late), but there was shortbread and tea in the room, the TV is great and the front desk people are extremely nice. They also have free luggage storage if you need it.

We searched long and hard to find a place to stay which is not too far from action, but far from noisy ones and more importantly close enough to walk about the city. Needless to say, we were glad we booked this hotel. The location (Prince Street) is very good and ideal for shopping trips. 10mins walk across the park you are in old part of the town. Shops and restaurants on either side of the hotel.
Staff were very friendly. We got a room in the middle of the building, hence noise was not a problem. We reached early and left late and there is a locked facility for safekeeping the luggage. Hotel has a bar which is open very late. Fantastic views from the bar with window views towards the Castle. Worth having a night cap after hard day walking about exploring the city. Bar charges are added to your room hence no need to carry around cash. Good selection of whiskey and even a German sweet dessert wine is on the menu.
Book ahead, the rooms can be dear otherwise. I would definitely recommend this place for couples and families. Did not see much of Stag/Hen party crowds, but may be there were all very civilised.
Very clean room, all white bed units, TV, AC/heater, tea/coffee facility in room, clean bathroom and adequate storage area. Shampoo and bath gel provided, bring your own moisturiser. Bed is fantastically soft. Expect cleaning service around 11AM for your tea tray top up.

Room Tip: We did not hear any noise from street below, but if you want extra quiet rooms try the middle sectio...

A fantastic review for the Old Waverley and my thanks for pointing out the little touches that went to making your trip so memorable. You did not notice any stag/hen parties as we do not, for operational reasons, accommodate groups of this type. Hope to see you again.

We spent our honeymoon at this hotel 20 years ago and thought it would be romantic to revisit the 'scene of the crime'. It seemed to have changed little - still no central heating or double glazing, so the room was chilly (outside temperatures were below zero) although the lightweight quilt seemed to do the job ok. The lack of double glazing made it quite noisy, especially as we were at the back (there is a £30 premium for a Princes St view), bins emptied at 5.00, drunks singing at 2.30 etc. the standard of cleaning was not brilliant - towels not folded and the bed made with my dressing gown inside it! The breakfast was the same each morning and adequate - for meat eaters, there were no veggie sausages on offer. Altogether a fairly pleasant nostalgic trip but we probably won't spend our next anniversary there.

Room Tip: Pay the extra £30 for a Princes Street view.

We've stayed here three times and every visit has been lovely. The staff is attentive and the breakfast is tasty. The rooms are small but who spends time in their room? The hotel's location is perfect for all of Edinburgh's attractions and shopping. I highly recommend the Old Waverly!

Stayed here for 2 nights as was very close to Waverley train station and Edinburgh Castle. I stayed in a single room which was fairly small but with a good sized bathroom overlooking Princes Street. The room included good tea & coffee making facilities and they supply shortbread which was yum! There is a hair dryer, but it was a bit naff so I would advise you take your own.

The check-in process was slightly confusing as they place a £50 "holding deposit" on your card which I have never experienced in a hotel before. This is to cover any additional expenses in case you do a runner apparently.

There is just the one lift servicing the whole of the hotel which sometimes meant a long wait or you were forced to use the stairs.

There is a lounge bar which was comfortable but with no atmosphere, it does however give a good view of the castle and Scotts Monument and is good for people watching on Princes Street. The bar food menu wasn't exactly inspiring but I have to say the Venison pie is very good. I did not eat dinner in the restaurant so I cannot comment.

I asked about Wifi access, and was told it was £3 for 12 hours or £5 for 24 hours. I think this was quite expensive, particularly when many hotels now provide free wifi access. I pay £15 a month for broadband at home so this hotel must make a fortune on this extra.

At night, I found it quite difficult to sleep as there is a lot of traffic up and down Princes Street, but the bed itself was comfortable.

Breakfast the next day was good with everything you might expect from a cooked breakfast. The coffee was very bitter unfortunately.

In short, this is a good hotel in a good location. As I was a lone female traveller, I felt quite safe here. If it wasn't for the fact I was travelling alone, I would have probably eaten my evening meals elsewhere and would have found somewhere to have a drink in the evening with slightly more atmosphere. Otherwise, ideal for business and leisure.

annoyed with the hotel holding £75 on my card incase I do a runner considering I paid on line a week in advance. Breakfast was good, staff were good in the restaurant but could be better on reception. Politely asked for a needle and tread but was told they don't have one! not helpful.
